Cockpit weather display question by
Chip Jones
OK, so there I was, training one of our scarce "newbie" controllers at ZTL
yesterday. There was a lot of convective weather and we were busy busy busy
trying to keep people from killing each other in the saddles and holes
between the storms. Anyway, as usual when I am training someone and...

GNS 430 simple question by
MJC
I have just one question for you Garmin GNS 430 owners:
The 430, of course, can output both GPS and VOR data to a CDI indicator.
However, what I'm wondering, is if you have two CDI's, can the 430 run both
of them at the SAME TIME.. one CDI set to GPS output and the other CDI set
to VOR...

Av Gas worries? Read This by
Spockstuto
By H. STERLING BURNETT
Every time oil prices rise for an extended period, the news media issue
dire warnings that a crisis is upon us --- it's not!
Many factors are contributing to the currently high gas prices:
limited refining capacity; political restrictions on development of new
domestic...

Flight Levels?? by
Chuck Dreier
I just returned on a flight from San Juan to Orlando and our flight level
was 300, including a portion over the mainland. Since then I've been
listening to my aircraft radio and routinely hear flights assigned FL320,
340, etc.. It was always 2000 feet separation with levels 290, 310, 330,
350,...

For [email protected] by
Bob Gardner
It is apparently not possible to communicate with you directly, so let me
explain how I got the 1.4 miles of protected airspace on the non-maneuvering
side of procedure turn airspace, and apologize for being wrong...the
protected airspace is 4.0 miles wide, giving the pilot even less reason to
work...

Extra Kollsman Altimeter Pointers by
[email protected]
I have an old Square D Kollsman 3 pointer altimeter that I think it's
about 50 or more years old and seems to be in working condition. The
body is about 2 13/16 diameter. The label on the back says part no.
371K-05
The three altitude pointers give the usual altitude readout. The little
Kollsman...

Altimeter discrepancy by
Gene Whitt
Y'all,
I have been flying in an aircraft where ATC has occasionally mentioned that
there is a 3-4 hundred discrepancy betwee our
communicated altitudes and that of our blind encoder. We have
acknowledged the difference.
The altimeters were certified some 300 miles away only three months ago.
ATC...

IFR VMC into KAXX by
John Clonts
I'm planning a flight into Angel Fire, NM (KAXX). I will be coming
in from the south via Las Vegas (LVS) at 10000 feet. If it's IMC I
will land and Las Vegas and drive from there (the only IAP into kaxx is
"out of my reach"). But if it's CAVU, I will fly still at 10k,
up the valley and pass,...

What causes the BANG when an airliner lifts off? by
G Farris
I've flown a lot of planes, of different sizes, and I always lift off gently.
When I fly as a passenger on an airliner though, there is a "thud" or even a
"bang" as the main wheels leave the runway. Sometimes this bang is so loud is
frightens passengers, and once it was strong enough (on a 777...

Have you ever seen a C-130 Hercules trying to do a hover over the runway ? by
Iwan Bogels
Check out http://www.dappa.nl/crash.htm
This video is about a (then) highly classified project to land a C-130 at a
soccer field, and get it back airborne from the same field with even more
load than during landing. The landing test caused the Herc to virtually
hover over the site, and the video...

172P vs 172R for instrument platform..... by
Jonathan
I currently rent a 172P for all of my flying needs. The FBO that I
rent at is getting a 172R. My question is what is everyones openion
of the 172R as an instrument platform? I know it should fly about like
the 172P. I am wondering about the systems and any added safety
features.
One thing that...

IFR to & from CLT - Delays and Fees to Expect by
David
I'm considering flying from ROA to CLT for a business meeting at the
airport itself next Tuesday -- arriving around noon and departing
around 16:00. I've not flown G/A to CLT before -- anyone able to
advise on the in/out delays (and fees) that I should expect? I'm
having a tough time justifying...

WIDOE by
Jon Woellhaf
Last Monday (16 Aug 2004) I was on an IFR flight from Oakland, CA to Ogden,
UT.
About thirty minutes from Ogden, I heard Salt Lake Center call a Lifeguard
flight and clear him direct to (what sounded like) widow. The pilot asked
for spelling and Center said Whiskey, India, Delta, Oscar, Echo....

Pre-flight planning really is worth doing. by
Roy Smith
Yesterday, I did something I don't get to do much any more -- just
headed off on a trip with no particular purpose in mind other than it
was a nice day and I wanted to go flying. I looked at a chart and found
an airport I'd never been to before, Claremont NH, and off I went. I
did enough...

Glass Panel Scan? by
G Farris
I have never (yet) flown in a GA airplane with a flat panel PFD/MFD.
I'll bet many in this forum have not either - but we all will very soon,
because the proliferation of such systems has far outpaced even the most
optimistic anticipations of only a short time ago. It has also outpaced...

Radio Range Question by
Charles Wood
Hello All,
Hoping some experts/old timers might help me on a basic Radio Range
question.
I understand the principle of merging the A's and the N's to get the
on-beam signal.
I have been told that, while originally this merge created a
continuous, uninterrupted tone except for the station...
