Instrument and panel lights in 152 by
TNap
I just upgraded the radio stack from the Cessna radios and audio
panel to a Garmin package (audio panel, 430 and transponder).
I noticed that the instrument panel light (red overhead) is now
on what appears to be near full intensity when in the off position.
When I rotate the control to highest...

Garmin GpsMap 396 - Flight Test #4 by
Mike Spera
Yesterday we planned on a proposed flight 50 miles away for dinner with
a light GA airplane newbie on board . The radar at home showed a very
narrow band of showers to the Northwest on a SW - NE line marching SE
towards us. The rain was limited to the lightest 2 green shades with an
occasional...

PIREP: nulite instrument lights by
Bob Noel
While I was down because of surgery I had the mechanic put
in nulites on the six-pack, the clock, and the suction gauge
(the turn coordinator was already lit). Tonight was the first
night I got to fly at night and these nulites beat the red
overhead light every which way. way cool
Highly...

AirGuide Publications FlightGuide Update Delays by
George Sconyers
How are those that are using AirGuide Publications FlightGuide finding the
timeliness of their bi-annual updates? It seems to me that they are running
quite a but behind as of late with the updates - but not on their billing
for the next year.
For those that have been using them for some time,...

Current prices for Aeroshell Oil by
Ronnie
Back in March there was a thread about the average
price of Aeroshell Oil. I just bought oil to restock
and paid the following as of today (7/3) from the distributor
in Austin, TX:
15W50 $52.83 per case (12 quarts)
100WPlus $41.34 per case
The person at the counter indicated...

Portable DVD players for kids? by
Jay Honeck
All of the sudden the last three fly-in guests (with kids) we've had at
the inn have had those slick little portable DVD players attached to
the backs of the head-rests, for viewing in the plane. Two of the
three had two of them -- on on each seatback, for separate viewing.
I've watched as the...

Garmin GpsMap 396 - Flight Test #3 by
Mike Spera
After the 2 ridiculous TFRs were lifted, I was able to test the swap
unit. As some of you may have read, the original unit kept losing
satellite lock and the dealer swapped it with a new unit at my request.
The replacement is much better. However, it still goes out to lunch
after transmitting...

Garmin GpsMap 396 - Flight Test by
Mike Spera
Made it up in the air today. Scattered cells and rain all over the
place. Mostly, moving out and clearing. 30 seconds after take off, lost
the GPS sat lock. Took about 15 seconds to regain it. In the next 5
minutes, it lost lock several more times. I'm thinking, external antenna
is loopy. I...

Cherokee Heater Controls? by
Bob Chilcoat
Our 74 Archer has the standard two-lever horizontal quadrant for heater and
defroster control. The last time I flew it, the heater was stuck on.
Moving the lever had no effect. Our feet were actually hurting it was so
hot. The defroster valve seems to work fine.
Yesterday, I took the little...

Garmin GpsMap 396 - Flight Test #2 by
Mike Spera
So I set up my other 2 GPS units in the cockpit and put their external
antennas right next to the Garmin. The Lowrance Airmap 1000 and an old
Apollo 920+ showed 5-9 sats up near the 80%. The Garmin showed 8+ sats
pinned at the top and one or two more at 50%. Immediately after liftoff
the Garmin...

followup pirep on Knots 2U wing root fairing by
Bob Noel
Previously I had posted that I didn't clearly notice any effect from
the installation of a Knots 2U Wing Root Fairing kit on my cherokee 140.
As part of my BFR I did some slow flight and stalls today. One difference
with the wing root fairings is that it was waaaay easier to fly with the stall...

GARMIN GNC 300XL TSO - Using the PC Interface by
KevinBlack
Hi,
Club aircraft has a GARMIN GNC 300XL TSO which according to the spec, has a
PC interface. Is there any software out there that I can run from a PC to
enter routes, waypoints etc directly into the device? Having a PC interface
is one thing, being able to use it without resorting to the SDK...

Nothing good about Ethanol by
180pilot
Conflict with aircraft fuel systems and Ethanol are many:
http://www.pmawwacs.org/downloads/gov_affairs/ethanol/Dept_Commerce_ethanol.pdf
California formulation is only about 5.7 percent Ethanol, so that
Cherokee 235 may get away with it for awhile, especially if it flies
to other airports and...

Connecting handheld to intercom in NORDO plane by

Hey folks,
I'm buying an airplane with no electrical system. I want to outfit it
with portable coms. I have a Vertex VXA-300 handheld with headset
connector, a Lightspeed QFR Solo headset, and a David Clark DC10
headset. I haven't bought the intercom yet.
Is there an easy way to get all this to...

Stuck panel screws by
[email protected]
I was reading a previous thread from May about owner assisted annuals. I
noticed a number of comments about drilling out stuck inspection panel
screws. Back when I used to work on airplanes as an avionics tech, someone
showed me a neat trick for getting stuck screws loose. When you find a
screw...

Ping: Mike Granby 396/KLN94 by
Jim Burns
Mike, since the Garmin firmware update 3.0 has been released allowing the
KLN94 serial input, have you removed your adapter or are you still using it?
Is anybody else inputting King serial data to their 396?
What about field approvals/337's for the Airgizmos panel mount? I'm not
arguing if you...
