What crashed in front of us today? by
Gordon
My son was taking his inaugural flight today, thanks to a "Chuck Yeager - Young
Eagle" program at Gillespie Field (El Cajon, CA). He was standing on the wing
of a sparkling red Grumman Yankee, getting his preflight brief from the owner
while various civil and antique a/c came and went on the...

What Happened to the He-274? by
Ashton Archer III
Did the French ever put the aircraft in a museum?
I was also wondering if there are any color photos of the machine
known in French service as the AAS-01A. All I can find is the old B&W
photos like this one:

What happened to the US AF RF-4 Phantoms ? by
Prowlus
I remembered the USAF did aquire the recon phantoms but they and their
role seems to have disappeared alltogether come the 90s.
Did they get phased out due to spy saterlites or do f-16s have a
secondary recon role that hasn't been used yet?

What if the germans... by
Charles Gray
had actually put a U.S. style R&D system in place during WWII, and
instead of coming up with (however pretty they look on paper) dozens
of designs that never made it beyond wind tunnal designs and focused
on say two or three fighter designs.
For example, if they'd pushed through the first jet...

What if we ignored N. Africa and the MTO? by
ArtKramr
What then? The war in central Europe (ETO) could have gotten our full
resouces, D Day would have been a year earlier and the war would have been
over a lot sooner, German troops in No. Africa and the MTO would have simply
been isolated and would died on the vine. Why not?

What is "Air Force 7"? by
Scott
A coworker is taking lessons at the local airport and he mentioned
having the get out of the way of Air Force 7 which was a 757 hanging
around the area for a few days.
Off at a distance a few days ago I noticed a 757 flying around the
airport and wondered what it was.
757's are not normally seen...

What is this? An ammo dump? by
TooPlaneCrazy7
Hello everyone,
I've been lurking in this group for quite a bit and have really enjoyed some
of the conversations. Now, I am asking for your help in identifying something
that I just found recently:
I live in South Texas near the Mexican border. There is a national park nearby
called "Laguna...

What it took to get wings in WW II. by
ArtKramr
WHAT IT TOOK TO GET WINGS IN WW II (part one)
1. First apply. You would be given a physical and a written test. You could
pass the written test if you were a good high school student with good skills
in math, physics and the general sciences. The physical exam was a lot tougher.
The vast majority...

What plane is this? by
thighmister
Never mind, I found out it's the Stearman A75.
http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z36/thighmister/Scan3.jpg
My grandfather was an Army Air Corps teacher, flying B-17s. I always wondered what plane this was and what it might have been used for. It looks like it must be a biplane to me. Would...

What REALLY Crashed @ Boscome Down? by
Kenneth Williams
A friend recently assured me that the mystery stealth aircraft that
crashed at Boscome Down was a TR-3B ASTRA (Advanced Stealth Technology
Recon Aircraft) which was positively identified as aircraft AV-6,
serial number 94-2414, call sign "Blackbuc 11".
He also said that Lockheed isn't the most...

What was B-70 bomber's bomb load ? by
Mike
The B-52 could carry about 27 tons of conventional bombs.
What about the never put into production B-70 bomber ? I've always
wondered what its bomb load was. Was that information ever released ?

What was the First Real Helicopter? by
Ashton Archer III
French or German?
I favor the Breguet-Dorand while most others claim the Focke-Wulf 61.
I can see how the German machine was proven superior in the long run,
but this does not invalidate the earlier B-D which IMO was the first
practical helicopter in the world.
For a short time it held many...
