WW2 story about Iwo Jima airplane repairs by Ron
Once I read a story about an American officer who complained to his superior about the way things were handled on the airfields of Iwo Jima. He thought that repairs to bombers returning from missions over Japan could be done much better and faster. The superior - not in a mood for a discussion -...

WWII 20mm cannon in planes by zxcv
It seems to me that the Germans and Japanese had a lot more cannon in their planes than the Americans who seemed to rely almost totally on .50 machine guns. Why was that? What was the rate of fire or the 20mm cannons and what type of projectiles did they fire?

WWII Aircraft still useful by Charles Talleyrand
Suppose someone was willing to give a modern air force a bunch of planes from WWII. The Luftwaffe can have several hundred Fw-190s. The US can have a pile of Catalina's (or DC-3s). The British can have as many Mosquitoes as they want. Are there any WWII aircraft that could still be useful in a...

WWII bomber night training by Luca Morandini
Gentlemen, any of you knows the training cycle for USAAF bombers' pilots (especially for night flight) in WWII ? I'm interested in the average time needed to become combat-ready for daylight operations and, especially, night ones. References to book and/or websites appreciated.

WWII Fighter Bombers by zxcv
Would a fighter plane (say a P-51 or P-40 for example) that was on mission to drop some tactgical bombs and encountered some any fighters generally drop its bombs before engaging the enemy? or just try to run away? or fight with them still hanging on (sounds pretty dangerous to me with the...

WWII FW190's, how good were they in dogfights? by [email protected]
Trying to fly these in the game IL2 is a waste of time, they are really crap. I can't believe this was realistic in comparison to other fighters of the time. Anyone know how good the real planes were and/or what their major weaknesses were?

WWII Soviet Pilot G A Merkviladze by Duncan Riddle
One of my wife's relatives is over here (England) studying for a few months. The subject of his great-uncle came up. It seems that he has some fame in Georgia - with various streets, blocks of flats and even a cargo ship named after him. It seems that his claim to fame was that he was a fighter...

WWII warplanes vs combat sim realism by [email protected]
Posted this on a thread but the guys were too busy flaming each other to notice or give an intelligent answer. Trying again......... I am having a debate on the subject of whether planes like the BF109 and FW190 were really as unstable and prone to stalls and spins at the drop of a hat as modelled...

X-15 damage by Paul F Austin
In Pete Knight's obituary in AvWeek, it mentioned that the record setting Mach 6+ flight in the X-15A2 resulted in structural damage to the aircraft that resulted in it being withdrawn from use. Was the damage a result of the thermal environment or was it the dynamic pressure envirnoment?

Has any other country had success with a Ramjet or Scramjet??? France tried Hypersonics in the 50s and failed I believe (wasn't it called the Griffon Aircraft). I have been following many new aerospace developments for a number of years (namely scramjets and aerospike rocket engines). A few things...

X-Plane Competition by Bill Clark
I saw a PBS special on the X-plane competition between Boeing and Lockheed for the Joint Task Force (JTF) fighter; the jet of the future. I think the whole thing was a total waste of money, and that by signing off on this competition the Pentagon has doomed America to a useless arsenal. Boeing's...
