Closest airfield to NYC to fly gliders or to keep a SLMG by albs
I live in Europe and will be relocating to New York City next spring. Which would be the closest airfield where I could keep a SLMG (doesn't necessarily need to be a glider club) or the closets airfield where gliders are operated (which and/or tow)? Any that you'd recommend in particular? thank you

automated flap setting by Wallace Berry[_2_]
A prototype automated flap system was mentioned in the recent Duckhawk discussion. My question: Given that our manual flap settings cannot be optimal, how much real-world improvement in climb and cruise could be gained with an automated flap system that always has the flaps at their optimal...

emailing your log file from an iPhone by Dave Nadler
These days we're asked to email our log files to the (often remote) scorer, and PC's are, well, so passe. It's a drag running around trying to find somebody with a PC to email the file. And we definitely to NOT want to delay the scoring. Some flight computers can send the log file directly from...

Who is oldest glider pilot by Casey[_2_]
Just saw this on the news. Oldest power pilot. CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) -- It's a classic saying: There are old pilots and bold pilots, but there are no "old, bold pilots." Last week, the Guinness Book of World Records named 98-year-old Ernie Smith, of Red Oak, Iowa, the oldest active pilot in...

Glider Handling Question by Roy B.
In this month's Gliding International article on the Ventus 3, Aldo Cernezzi writes, "According to Berd Weber, I flew with a relatively forward CoG, which may have an impact on roll speed". This got me to thinking of my own anecdotal experiences with very forward CGs having a negative impact on...

Not so much as a scratch (R4S at New Castle) by Tango Eight
I think we may have set a regional contest record for non-completions at R4S at New Castle this year. Every day shut off like a switch, not always in a predictable way or at a predictable time. Happily, conservatism ruled the day. The vast majority of the incomplete tasks resulted in landings...
