Question on Avidyne FlightMax by Jim Caldwell
How do you update the GPS database? Does it have a portable uploader with a CD-ROM? How long does it take? I have to keep a fleet of King Air arcraft updated. They have an obsolete Interstate GPS system. The portable uploader is floppy-disk based. You have to feed in a set of floppies, and the...

My First Time In Severe Turbulence (Long) by David B. Cole
Tuesday's forecast for my neck of NJ was for a high of 63, light rain, and 1500 overcast. The perfect day to get some actual IMC. My instructor and I had planned on going to Hartford, CT to fly the LDA Rwy 2 approach. However, by the time I made it to the airport the layers were mostly scattered...

Question about KLN-89B by Casey Wilson
Hello all, Anybody know of an available function in the KLN-89B that shows 'velocity made good?' That is, if you are not flying directly toward a waypoint, what is the closing velocity? Groundspeed, as reported, is relative to the velocity vector, so that isn't the correct figure. Why? you ask. ...

FAA pulls funding for LAAS landing systems by JJ
LAAS (Local Area Augmentation System) was to provide CAT 2 and 3 ILS capability at major airports by fine tuning GPS and up loading correction signals to aircraft. FAA has canceled the program. Looks like the ground based ILS systems once slated for removal by 2010 are here to stay.

Garmin GPSmap 196 on 172 Yoke by Otto Braasch
Hi, Planning to put a GPSmap 196 for backup in my Cessna 172 I would appreciate to learn whether somebody has mounted a 196 on a 172 yoke? May I learn about the mounting gear used - original Garmin or OEM hardware like RAM? How about drawbacks or pros experienced with either gear? Otto Braasch...

Outer Marker by Barry
When doing an ILS approach, with the glideslope, is it a requirement to be able to identify the outer marker or a substitute? FAR 91.175(k) lists the outer marker as one of the "basic ground components" and gives the acceptable substitutes, but doesn't explicitly say that it's required. The AIM...

MRB DP Update by [email protected]
Update on Runway 26 DP to Linden R-019 at KMRB From the FAA folks who design IAPs and DPs: "..they are going to make a change to the text of the departure description, something to the effect of "runway heading to intercept the R-019 then via the r-019 to TRIXY...". They are in the process...

Night over water by Stuart King
I left MYR (Myrtle Beach, SC) last night about 8PM, departing on rwy 18. A VFR aircraft departed just before me, and he got departure instructions of turn north on course as soon as able (over the land). I was continued 180 after takeoff on an IFR flight plan. I was about 1/2mile out over the...

Can ATC assign an airway if filed direct? by Andrew Sarangan
If you file to a VOR direct, can ATC clear you along an airway instead, and expect you to look up the airways? In other words, how important is to carry an enroute chart if you don't plan on using airways?

Icing Airmets by Andrew Sarangan
I've been watching the icing airmets for some time now, and it seems to be getting more and more conservative to the point of being unrealistic. For example, right now the freezing level is at 5000 ft, MEA is at 2500 ft, yet we have an airmet Z that goes all way from SFC to 18k. How could you...

Approach speeds for ILS by C J Campbell
We get foggy here at Tacoma Narrows this time of year (which is the reason I post more on these groups in the winter than in the summer). One thing we see a lot of is guys who fly the ILS too fast. I have no problem with flying the ILS at 90 or 100 knots if the ceiling is well above minimums, but...
