Commencing a GPS approach from a fix other than the FAF by
Chris Quaintance
Hi Folks-
Please forgive what is probably a simple question regarding GPS
approaches. I am new the the /G world. I was out flying my 182P today
to do some practice approaches. The airplane is equipped with a GNS480
and I have a Garmin 296 on the yolk. I was buzzing around NW of the
Salinas...

Boundaries between Approach/Departure and Center by
Mxsmanic
What determines the boundaries between airspace managed by an en-route
ATC center and an approach or departure center? I don't see any clear
indication of which is which on sectionals. There are boxes saying
who to contact for approach, but nothing that shows where the handoffs
between terminal...

IFR through Florida - airways? by
Peter R.
Due to a business meeting, I will be flying from NY to Miami, Florida in a
few weeks.
In looking over the en route charts, I see a lot of MOAs, restricted, and
prohibited airspaces throughout Florida. Also, my destination is
Kendall-Tamiami (KTMB), which is just southwest of Miami International...

Personal Minimums SEL? by
Paul kgyy
I'm curious what Instrument Rated members of this group use for
personal minimums for takeoff and landing for single engine aircraft.
The question is prompted by a recent flight where the takeoff
conditions were 200 ft + 1 mile. That's lower than I've ever done
before, and it occurred to me that...

Confusion about when it's my navigation, and when it's ATC by
Mxsmanic
I fly from KLAX to KLAS, using the FMC to handle most of the flight.
With the routing I put in, the FMC decides on some default altitudes
and includes required altitudes for the arrival and departure
procedures I select. Part of what it does is to create a descent
schedule from the nominal cruise...

Extra Hold Depicted on Plate? by
Mitty
We are getting a brand new ILS 26 at KANE and I just downloaded the plate. The
miss is what I expected to see and is a hold at the GEP "Gopher" VOR a few miles
to the west. But there is also a hold depicted at the PNM NDB, which is a long
ways away. That hold is not mentioned on the plate.
I...

Precip types based on return by
[email protected]
If you look at the radar plots at NOAA's site here
http://radar.weather.gov/radar_lite.php?product=NCR&loop=no&rid=cxx
there is no prediction for precip type, just the value of reflectivity
is given.
At Intellicast...

Implications of.....keeping the speed up by
[email protected]
So let's say I'm inbound to Teterboro from the west, doing 250 kias
below 10,000 in descent. Atc gives me a radar vector, and clears me
to maintain 4000 feet.
1, Do I need to slow to 200 kias at some time?
2. I'm considering that I may well be less than 3000 feet AGL (or is
2500 the magic...

LNAV, VNAV and LPV by
Andrew Sarangan
Is there a formal discussion of these various approach minimums? I
looked through all the obvious places (AIM, GPS manuals, AOPA
articles), but I haven't found a comprehensive discussion of these.
Example:
My understanding of LNAV/VNAV is that it has a barometrically generated
glideslope. That...

Pilot, flight instructor, and aviation author William K. Kershner, 77, died

Bill K. gone west. by
Margy Natalie
I spent many a long hour with Kershner while I was a student pilot. My
copy is so ragged looking it's embarrassing. I actually spent an hour
on the phone with him when he called the museum asking to donate copies
of his Private Pilot Manual to the education department. He was really...

This one is just funny:
http://www.avweb.com/avwebflash/13_2a/briefs/Stealing_From_Peter_To_Pay_Paul_194158-1.html
Why is it funny? Because Tracy is, or was, the only airport I know that
LOCKS and SHUTS DOWN their card activated fueling at night, making them
practically useless for a fuel stop...

Flying a DME Arc with a non WAAS GNS530 by
Roy N5804F
I am sure someone in this group can answer this question.
When using a Garmin 530, without WAAS, will it output Roll Steering commands
when flying a DME Arc ?
Thanks

R172K Approach Configuration by
facpi
Anyone give me a clue of the approach configuration of R172K? For
instance, now I use 100kts, 15inch, 2500RPM with no flaps for the
precision approach (ILS) for the training but it is not stable and too
fast for landing after DA.
I insist 90kts is good speed for the approach level and the...

Requesting a hold from ATC for descents by
Mxsmanic
If it becomes impossible to respect your descent schedule, is it
permissible to ask ATC to give you a hold temporarily so that you can
descend in the hold pattern until you're back to your planned descent?
If so, is this a fairly common procedure, or very unusual? I'm
thinking with respect to...

GNS 430W vs GNS 480 by
Ron Gordon
I'm going to add either the GNS 430W or GNS 480 to a Beach Bonanza and am
wondering if any of you who fly with these GPS units have a recommendation?
I'd like a very capable IFR GPS with integrated NAV/COM abilities, which
I'll couple to my S-TEC 50 Autopilot with GPSS. Both the 430W and 480 are...
