PWK ILS ? by
Stuart King
I was flying to PWK on an IFR plan in VFR weather. ATC vecotered me to
final for the ILS 16, clear to land rwy 16.
I double check the wind and its out of 270 at 20kts. I ask for the visual
to rwy 24. Denied, unless i wish to cancel IFR and proceed VFR. I asked
why, and they said something...

Q by
Stuart King
I was enroute from FLO direct to JZI. I was suffering in severe clear with
no turbulence at all.
About 20nm out, ATC gives me "N1234, proceed direct CHS Vortac and hold as
published, EFC xyz".
I reply "roger direct CHS and hold as published, EFC xyz, ....is there a
reason for this ? " sometimes...

Q about lost comms on weird clearance by
Paul Tomblin
I normally fly out of Rochester NY, which is towered and class C. And 99%
of the time my clearance route is "Vectors as filed". But yesterday I had
to stop off at Batavia to pick up something, and then continue on to
Goderich Ontario. Since it's just easier to be on an IFR flight plan...

Q: CYKF (Kitchener/Waterloo Regional) ILS RWY 25 by
David Megginson
I was glancing at the IAP for the CYKF (Kitchener/Waterloo) ILS 25
tonight (like most Canadian plates, it's not available online), and I
noticed that the DH is very high:
ILS 1554 (500) 1 1/2
LOC 1560 (506) 1 1/2
CIRCLING 1560 (506) 1 1/2 1560 (506) 2 1700 (646) 2
Ouch! Does anyone know why...

Question about Approach Plates by
Russ MacDonald
One of my students asked me a question the other day that I have been unable
to answer.
Many instrument approaches are labeled with a letter following the primary
name and the letter indicates that the final approach course is not lined up
(beyond 30 degrees) with any runway, and that a circling...

question about instrument proficiency check by
Sylvain
Until recently I was convinced that only a CFII could
conduct an instrument proficiency check (as opposed
to a plain CFI), but now I am confused:
14 CFR 61.195(c) says that an instructor must have an
instrument rating on *both* his pilot and instructor
certificates, i.e., be a CFII, in order...

Question about KLN-89B by
Casey Wilson
Hello all,
Anybody know of an available function in the KLN-89B that shows
'velocity made good?' That is, if you are not flying directly toward a
waypoint, what is the closing velocity? Groundspeed, as reported, is
relative to the velocity vector, so that isn't the correct figure.
Why? you ask. ...

Question on airplane's IFR capability by
Slav Inger
I'm planning on transitioning from a PA-28-181 to Diamond models (DA20C1
and then to DA40). I'd like to use the DA40 for longer trips and DA20
for putzing around the airport practicing IFR approaches, possibly in
IMC. There isn't a question as to DA40's IFR capability, but I'm
running into a bit...

Question on Aivdyne / Garmin Integrated Avionics Packages by

I'm trying to understand how capable the new breed of integrated

that although these systems are very capable, they don't have the
"mission capabilities" of a Proline 21. I.e., the Eclipse and Garmin
systems are ok for...

Question: DP altitude vs MCA/MEA by
Doug Easton
Here's a question for the group from a low time ifr pilot...
The HASSA4 DP out of Ontario, CA specifies a minimum climb gradient that
would take you over the POM vor at 4400ft and then out V197 to the PMD vor.
The MCA for the POM vor nw bound on V197 is 8300ft and the MEA for that
segment is...
