First couple hours of real CFII dual given.... by
Blaine
An enlightening experience first of all. I figured since I had just
got the second 'I' on CFII, and since I have given plenty of regular
dual to Private students, I wouldn't have too much of a problem.
The guy I flew with is working on a phase of the WINGS program and
wanted several hours of hood...

How much protection on approach? by
Michael
How much protection do we have on an off-field VOR approach? I was
always under the impression that as long as the equipment was within
tolerances for an airborne VOR receiver check (+/- 6 degrees) and the
approach was flown to PTS tolerances (no more than 3/4 scale
deflection) it was impossible...

IFR or IFR Refresher? by
Rod Madsen
It's been discussed here before. They are both good but slightly different.
I prefer IFR, and its got more pages.

Solid State Backup AI by
Dan Truesdell
I'm part owner of a IFR 172E. Nice equipment, but no vacuum redundancy.
I know I can add a dual-rotor vacuum pump or a manifold-driven
alternate vacuum source, but I'd rather have an electric backup (in case
of engine failure). Electric pumps add weight and good backup electric
AI's are...

Approach Timer Frustration by
Andrew Sarangan
Over the years I have been using various digital timers, but so far I
have not been satisfied with any of them. The LCD displays make them
difficult to read when viewing at different angles. The right seat
pilot (or CFII) cannot see the digits. Lack of illumination in most
units is another big...

Turbo Alternator by
Wyatt Emmerich
Anybody had any experience with the Turbo Alternator? It is a wind-driven
fan, about 7 pounds, which drops down from your wind in the event of an
electrical failure. It puts out about 15-20 amps--enough to drive all your
instruments.

AF/D's and NOTAM by
Andrew Sarangan
I am curious how many of you routinely consult the AF/D prior to every
IFR flight. The reason is, a well known FAA inspector at a recent
safety seminar commented that those little green books were not of
much use anymore, and that most pilots simply don't use them. I was
surprised, because I've...

Capt. Al Haynes sorta OT. by
James Blakely
I know everyone hear remember Capt. Haynes. Capt. Haynes was the pilot of
United flight 232 when the center engine suffered an uncontained failure
and the DC-10 lost all of its hydraulic systems. Capt. Haynes landed the
ship at Sioux City using differential power. His handling of the...

looking for non-vector DP near New York by
Roy Smith
I'm learning the CNX-80 my club just installed. One of today's tasks
was to load and fly a DP to make sure I knew how that worked.
Unfortunately, at my home airport (White Plains), when you go to load
the Westchester One, you discover there are no DP's available in the
database. OK, we headed...

Alternate Intersection Name in Brackets? by
Marco Leon
Hi all. What does it mean when there's an alternate intersection name in
brackets in the new AOPA Flight Planner? As an example, there's an
intersection just south of the Wash D.C. Class B where V286 and V16 cross.
It's called TAPPA but the new AOPA flight planner also has in
brackets. It also...

Cheap IFR GPS (M3 approach ?) advice by
Martin Kosina
Hi all,
I am toying with the idea of installing a "cheap" IFR GPS in my '76
Cardinal. Being admittedly a bottom-feeder in this area, my choices
are basically limited to a used KLN89B, or the Northstar M3 Approach,
something like a $1500 setup total.
I don't think an avionics shop would touch...

Flight Oximeter and 02 Saturation Standards by
O. Sami Saydjari
I just bought a FlightStat Fingertip Pulse Oximeter as an added measure
of safety when flying at oxygen altitudes (with oxygen, obviously).
Anyway, the device does not really come with any guidelines on threshold
levels below which you should be concerned.
1. A little background reading suggests...

EFAS by
Anthony Acri
I am a pilot from Toronto, Canada. Will be flying all the down to Fort
Myers in Florida next week hopefully if this weather ever lets up. Coming
down in a Baron B55, no boots thought.
How do I use EFAS in the US. I know the frequency is 122.0.
What kind of remarks do I use on my initial call...

GDL 49/EchoFlight Reception by
O. Sami Saydjari
I recently installed a Garmin GDL 49 to receive weather reports from
satellite (Echoflight subscription). I was disappointed that we only
were in contact with the satellite for 60% of the time. In particular,
we were not able to get reports just as we needed them...as we were
approaching IFR...

shortest runway w/ an ILS? by
Snowbird
recent thread has me wondering:
what's the shortest runway you've encountered with an ILS?
About the shortest I can think of offhand is the ILS 24 at
RID (Richmond, Indiana), 5500 ft.
We may have been somewhere w/ a shorter runway served by an
ILS, but probably didn't fly an ILS and I don't...
