Look outside! Fly like an eagle (video.) by
Burt Compton - Marfa Gliders, west Texas
When I fly with students in training and seasoned sailplane pilots for their flight review, I notice that most do not turn their head to look around outside the cockpit as much as they should (perhaps mesmerized by a simple variometer or a more sophisticated display.)
This video shows how an...

It finally happened by
Bob Pasker
Recently, I got a commercial glider add-on. I have lots of flights, but I don't have much actual soaring experience, and today was day 3 (out of 4) learning to soar, and it was the first day I had really great soaring weather..
On my second flight today in the 1-36 out of Estrella, I got off tow...

How can I download my current PowerFlarm configuratoin? by
[email protected]
Just purchased a new to me glider that has PowerFlarm installed. I'm updating the panel and may need to make some Flarm configuration changes to make things work. However, I also want to be sure I don't break other things that are already configured and working well. So, I want to see exactly...

Ads-b and sailplanes by
Andrew Ainslie
Has anyone been following the latest moves from the FAA on ads-b and experimental aircraft? A recent article in flying suggested that they are going to relax the requirements for experimental planes so they need a GPS source that is equivalent in performance to TSO'd units.
If this is true, it...

1090 Mhz vs 978 UAT. Are satellites a future consideration? by
Vaughn
It seems that the European Space Agency has quietly, albeit
experimentally, been collecting mass ADS-B data from space.

PowerFLARM protocol 71? by
kirk.stant
Are we supposed to use protocol 71 with the new PF load? Butterfly used to say use 61 for the standard butterfly display - is that still valid or should 71 be used.
Same question for PF to SN10 - use the default (1) or protocol 71?

Outdated ways of thinking about digital content by
son_of_flubber
I'm a member of SSA, OSTIV and NSM (Soaring museum at Harris Hill).
SSA puts digital versions of Soaring magazine behind a pay wall (only available to members).
OSTIV puts archives and current publications behind a paywall.
Now NSM is trying to raise $15-20000 to digitize historical soaring...

Tiny loggers by
[email protected]
Just bought a new Tiny(TM) logger to replace my trusty but defunct Volkslogger. Just looking at it, it seems that what it is, is an automobile GPS navigator that was washed in hot water and dried on high heat.
Seriously, well, semi-seriously, this new logger is a marvel. It slices, it dices, it...

King Mountain by

I'm planning an Idaho soaring trip this summer, searched ras and checked out the King Mountain website.
Would like to hear from people with experience at King Mountain about task planning in the area. Looking to do some 300-500km training flights in a two place glider and longer flights in my...

Borgelt B50 and PowerFLARM Question by
Paul Remde
Hi,
A customer has asked me to help him connect his PowerFLARM Core to his
Borgelt B50 and Naviter Oudie.
He had ordered a K6 Mux - which would definitely work, but I wonder if a
simpler and less expensive cable solution would also work well. I have the
required Goddard PBvB50 cable in...

Best cross country ship class by
Seattle
I'm in the market for a standard class or 15 meter flapped ship. This is my first ship, and I doubt I want to deal with 18 m of wings.
An example would be a Discus 2 vs ASW 27. Currently most of my flight goals are simple: get as high up, and far out as possible. Speed is nice, but I'm doubtful...

Discus/DG-300 performance difference by
[email protected]
Hi All
I'm currently in the market for my first glider and am looking at standard class machines of the Discus/DG-300 era. Having read the Johnson tests and many posts on this forum, I'm a bit confused as to where the touted performance difference comes from though. Dick Johnson found the polars to...
