Flying from Vegas to Carson City by
Mike Noel
I'm planning to fly from Tucson to Carson City in a couple of weeks. I'll
probably make a refueling stop in my Archer at Boulder City, then skoot
under the Vegas class B to the west and head up towards Beatty and on to
Carson City.
Do any of you have experience with flying this route? Any...

Copper in oil analysis ? by

Peter wrote:
I've just had a big increase in copper; wonder where copper comes
from. The engine is an IO-540-C4D5D, 500 hrs since new in 2002.
I had the same thing happen. Copper comes from brass bushings. In my
case the wrist pin broke in the middle and the bushing was being
destroyed. I...

Lycoming O-360 oil suction screen torque by
[email protected]
Hi,
I'm looking for the torque specification for the oil suction screen (the one
near the bottom of the engine) for a Lycoming O-360. It's the A4A model. I'm
planning on inspecting the suction screen on the next oil change.
Thx!

2.4 hours - no oil/grease on prop/windshield by
Jay Honeck
Well, we flew 2.4 hours today, in VERY cold (19 degree) air temps. Got
done, carefully inspected the prop, cowling and windshield -- no
oil/grease found.
What's up with THAT? How could my prop leak just "heal itself"?
Not that I'm complaining, mind you -- but I get skeptical when...

Ping karl and Matt: My JPI probes' ambient temperatures by
Peter R.
karl G and Matt B, in lieu of our previous discussion about what appears to
be too low JPI CHT readings in my aircraft, I finally had the opportunity
to note the ambient temperatures for all of my JPI probes today, as the
aircraft had been sitting for a few days without the Tannis heater...

Control surface repair legal? Part II by
[email protected]
A few weeks ago, I acquired the "collective usenet wisdom" on whether or not moveable control surfaces are repairable. The
answer I received was that "It depends on whether or not the service manual allows it." As an example, I looked through a Piper
Cherokee service manual which said that the...

engine monitor wiring harness install by
Jim Burns
How are your engine monitor probe leads and wiring harnesses secured? Adel
clamps on the rocker box covers? Tie wrapped to your ignition leads? Tie
wrapped to the intake tubes? Adel clamps to the lower case/sump bolts?
I'm interested to hear about your installations. What you like and...

Recording Hobbs by
BG
Does anyone use a PDA to record in a small spreadsheet the departure
airport, your destination airport, and the Hobbs & Tach readings when
you land? If so, what would be the brand and the main features of the
PDA? Thanks

Skytec starters for 0-470s??? by
Guy Byars
I am considering upgrading the starter in my 182P Skylane with the new
Sky-Tec flyweight starter. It looks like it will spin the prop faster -w-
less power.
Does anyone have experience with the Sky-Tec flyweight starter in an O-470
engine?

UPDATE #2 -- Headset Noise by
Jonathan Goodish
I flew the airplane today, and headset noise (alternator whine) has not
been completely eliminated by the resolution of the ground loop through
the intercom system, but it has been further reduced to a level where it
is just manageable. The "chop chop" or "flutter" electrical noise is
still...

Bought my first plane:-D by
EridanMan
So I put a deposit down on N4261J, a Piper Cherokee 140 (that I
mentioned in an earlier post).
The previous owner had nicknamed her 'Julie' (for obvious reasons)...
My fiancee fell in love with the name so I think it's stuck;)
I don't think I have ever been quite so excited, I feel like a...

Is there a "correct" panel layout? by
Dico
I'm wondering... if you were laying out your panel today... is there a
specific way, perhaps a "standard" way, that you'd layout your
instruments? I've seen some un-intuitive layouts and I'm wondering if
anyone and provide me with some insight as to safest/user friendly
layout.
Thanks,
-dr

Odd starting problem by
Prime
Perhaps somebody here has an idea about this little problem.
A few weeks ago, shortly after annual, I tried to start our Cherokee 140.
It kicked for a few revs, and then failed to start no matter what I did.
I noticed the aux fuel pump kept pumping, as if it was not building
pressure. The primer...

Nothing clearly different in the handling/performance of the plane.
Of course, I hadn't flown the airplane since Nov 05 (surgery) so
insert jokes about not remembering much here..

Chelton vs. Garmin - what am I missing? by
Jim Carter
Lots of chatter about Garmin's, but no one talks about the Chelton
avionics. Looking at TAP recently it seems the prices are very close to
the same for similarly equipped panels. I understand that Garmin appears
to be cheaper to piece meal together and that the Chelton appears to be
an all or...
