Using an iPad mini for soaring stuff by
Eric Greenwell[_4_]
I decided traveling with a tablet computer in a touring motorglider
would be easier than lugging around my 6+ pound Windows laptop, so I
took advantage of a good deal on an iPad mini. I thought it's wealth of
aviation apps, including soaring apps like iGlide, and others was a plus.
It's a...

Using Condor simulator to improve decision making by
[email protected]
I am wondering what people think about using the Condor simulator to improve gliding and soaring decision making -- things like when to turn back given lift, weather, continuing to exploit lift along a ridge, and so on.
Does the simulator present enough varied challenges to help with this sort of...

Using European Oxygen Bottle in DG-1000? Where to buy? by
Jeremy Zawodny
I've been reading the messages about the DG-400 oxygen system with some
interest.
In the DG-1000 that I often fly, we have a US oxygen bottle, the AL-647
listed on the Mountain High site:
http://www.mhoxygen.com/index.phtml?nav_id=28&product_id=359
The DG-1000 has a factory made oxygen cut out...

using less spoiler just before the flare??? by
Gary Emerson
Greetings,
This may get many comments, but I'm curious as to the consensus.
On a recent training flight (wasn't me...) the student was advised to go
to about 2/3 spoiler just before the flare.
Normal approach, field was made, on target for a nice touchdown.
When I was getting instruction, I...

Using mobile SeeYou by
Robert Hart
Hi
I have been using mobile SeeYou (in competitions and every day soaring)
for two seasons and have helped a number of others with their
installation and use of the necessary hardware and software.
As a result of this I am writing a series of articles about how I use
mobile SeeYou -

Using Plasma Rope For Winch Tows by
Craig Freeman
We recently converted from 3/16 7x9 cable to 3/16 plasma rope on our winch.
"Plasma", made from Honeywell "Spectra" fiber, seems to have some real
advantages over wire or cable. Some benifits include light weight, 11.48lbs
per thousand, (that's not much even converted to metric!!), hollow braid
(no...

Using the Nook as a navigation instrument by
Nyal Williams[_3_]
I know this is done for navigation in gliders. I'm interested to know
whether the Nook can be converted to a GPS for cars and whether there is an
app it would accept for showing compass headings based on satellite info
instead of using the magnetic poles.
Does anyone know about this or can...

Using the wrong hydraulic brake fluid by
Nelson Howe
Not knowing any better, I used Aeroshell 4 when I bled and topped up the hydraulic brake system in my Discus 2b. Initially it got the sponginess out of the brake. After working on it some more about a week later, I found it impossible to bleed the system further ( I thought I might still have a...

Using wget to save dr.jack files without cookies by
[email protected]
Greetings,
I used to have a batch file set up on a previous computer which would download 6 images of soaring data each day from dr.jack's site. This worked but used the cookie info within wget to get access to future day data.
My new computer is not playing nicely with cookies so I tried to use...

using winch instead of aerotow by
goneill
Our club has gradually moved to winch over the last few years and now we use
ordinary aerotow rope on the winch (its cheap, made everywhere ,easy to
splice
and wears extremely well)Rope bungees slightly so pilots have to be trained
how to keep an even load on the cable (makes you a smoother pilot as...

Using XCOM and Flight Line radios in certificated gliders by
Paul Remde
Hi,
A customer has asked me whether or not it is legal to install and use a
non-FAA-approved radio such as the XCOM 760 or FlightLine FL-760 in a type
certificated glider. XCOM's statement on the subject is copied below. Some
aircraft mechanics and avionics shops seem OK with installing those...

A nice story about the Naval Academy's soaring program. Maybe they'll

Utah Soaring Sorted Out? by

Having heard great things about soaring in Utah, I'm a but confused about where each outfit is based. A call to the USA didn't help. It might be a lot to ask, but much appreciation to someone who could review the various soaring opportunities (towing? guest flights? Season?) in the state....

I have not yet had a chance to try it out...
