Best aircraft for this mission? by
waterdog
I'm looking to purchase or possibly build an airplane that
- Is amphibious, based at an airport with day trips to salt water
- Can carry 2 or 3 long surfboards 10ftx2ft
- 1,000 usable load after fuel
- feasible for a low-time pilot to transition to
Anyone out there know of an aircraft well suited...

New Battery -- thanks for the recommendation by
Jay Honeck
Just installed the new Concorde RG 35AXC -- the most powerful battery
approved for my plane -- and, wow, what a difference! No more "bumping"
the starter to get the prop past the highest compression stroke of that big
ol' six cylinder on a hot day... It just whirls it right around!
When I...

Jay Honeck-Ercoupe on a roof by
[email protected]
Hey Jay! We found an Ercoupe mounted on the roof of a gas station in
Wautoma, Wisconsin. I thought of you and your hotel immediately, of course.
Maybe you could do something similar. I'll post photos I took of it on
alt.binaries.pictures.aviation.

Sticky DG and DME distance question by
A Lieberman
Couple of questions.
Went up to practice some ILS approaches. While being vectored for my
approaches, my DG kept sticking through the 270 heading. First time on my
initial approach and the second approach. Third and fourth approaches, DG
acted normal, though seem a little off compared to the...

WxWorx or Anywhere Wx by
Jon Kraus
We are contemplating adding a weather uplink system and was wondering
what experience you have had on the WxWorx or Anywhere Wx. We are
leading towards the Anywhere Wx but wanted to get some comments on both.
Thanks!!

Oil change questions by
Jimmy B.
Well, it was time to change the oil in the old bug smasher. Seeing this
is my first time, I hired a mechanic to walk me through it. Of course
it is pretty straight forward, but a few questions came up.
1) The oil filter specified a torque setting of 16 to 18 ft-lbs. The
mechanic told me mot to...

Lost comm procedure for Flight Following (more on Honek's posting) by
G. Sylvester
I was on flight following going into Shelter Cove, CA. I was at 6500.
I flew VFR as Shelter Cove has no IAP but saw the MEA's were 6700 (IIRC)
and according to a FSS briefer, radar coverage up there "sucks." Anyway
OAK center was relatively quiet. Granted, I know many times the same
guy will...

WiFi at AirVenture (was:Does your airport WiFi?) by
Dave Butler
On a related note: there was a thread here earlier about wireless access at
Oshkosh. IIRC the sad conclusion was that there was no access very nearby.
I wonder whether anyone has contacted EAA and requested that they get on the
stick and provide WiFi on the North 40.
Is there any chance EAA would...

Leaning to Hotest Cylinder by
O. Sami Saydjari
My understanding is that one should lean using the "hotest" cylinder as
the reference point for peak EGT. My question is on the interpretation
of "hotest." Does that mean the cylinder that reaches the hotest EGTs
or CHTs? On mine, they are inversely related (the hotest EGTs are on
the coldest...

Question on ferry flight for inspection by
M
What's the FAR regulation regarding launching a flight for the sole
purpose to get the plane to the mechanic for a mandatory inspection?
Say there's a recurring AD that's due in 1 Tach hour and maintenance
facility is 2 hours away. Can I legaly launch the flight without
getting a ferry...

Cherokee Fuel Gauge by
Mike Spera
When I had my tanks out in 1999 for the paint job and hose replacement,
I also noticed stains from the sending units downward. I decided to
replace the gaskets and reseal the things "while I was at it". The local
wrenches said that getting the screws around the sending unit to seal
completely was...

Evaluating high-time airfames by
Andrew Gideon
My club is purchasing another 172. One of the choices we've found - and
otherwise nice airplane - has racked up 10,000 hours total time. Most of
the other aircraft at which we've looked have had TTs of something less
than half this.
Are there special considerations for an airframe with this much...

Training in flight school aircraft by
Scott Migaldi
Now that I am an aircraft owner I wanted to do some training in my
aircraft before I take it up into IMC. I have been doing the typical VFR
types of drills on my own, stalls, slow flight TO/landings, I even shot
some approaches in VFR but not under the hood to make sure all the
gizmos worked. Now I...
