Is this a special platform for testing JSF hovering? by

In this photo the JSF is hovering over what looks like a giant metal
grill. Is this a special test site for testing JSF hovering? I imagine
that such a grill would allow you to simulate higher altitude...

F-86 and sound barrier by
VH
I was watching the Discovery Channel program comparing the
F-86 and Mig-15 and heard that the F-86 can break the sound
barrier. I know that this has been claimed many time before
but is that the official position of the US Air Force? Is
Yeager still officially the first man to break the...

Iran crisis 1946 and Yugoslavia by
Vic Flintham
With the USSR stuck in northern Iran (Azerbaijan) in spring 1946, there
were Soviet complaints of incursions into Soviet airspace by two US
aircraft. I believe that Mosquitoes of 680 Sqn RAF undertook recce
sorties over southern USSR, but does anyone have details or a reference
for USAAF (or...

D-Day Stukas by
Vic Flintham
I would appreciate help for a forthcoming article. I have read accounts
that the 339th and 355th FGs claimed 11 Ju 57s destroyed, 1 probable and
6 damaged around Orleans on D-Day, 6 June 1944.
Does anyone know the Luftwaffe unit or units involved, since there
should not have been any Ju 87s...

"Miserable Failure" and the biography of G.W.Bush by
Vicente Vazquez
Just found this out.
Type "Miserabel failure" on Google search and the first result you get is
.... the "Biography of President George W. Bush " at www.whitehouse.gov .
Strangely, neither the word "miserable" nor "failure" show up on the pages's
text. That's weird ... :-)

Seems like oly a couple of wing servos and a pair of engines were
recoverable. A sad end for an impressive R/C model. :-(

Nonsense: Il-76 could have "saved California from fires"... by
Vicente Vazquez
Just read this in a Brazilian Aviation Magazine's website. Absolute nonsense
IMHO...
Of course, the editor is known for his preference for russian aircraft. ;-)
Of course he has the right to have his opinion and prefereces, but I guess
some good sense might help a bit...

P-51 wings: silver paint or natural metal ? by
Vicente Vazquez
AFAIK, P-51D's had their wings painted silver (upper & under surfaces)
before delivery, while the fuselage remained with a natural metal
finish.
OTOH, I've seen some pics of WWII P-51D's with wings in natural metal
finish.
On a scale modelling forum, someone pointed out that "... the covering

WW2 and Korean ace Edwin Heller has passed away by

WW2 and Korean ace Edwin Heller has passed away. Many of us will best
remember him as the pilot of the 352nd FG P-51's marked
"Heller-Bust".He also flew F-86's in Korea, and spent two years as a
PoW of the Chinese after his plane was shot down by a MiG-15 while he
was pursuing another MiG.
May he...

Overall yellow Fw-190A-6 ??? by
Vicente Vazquez
Pierre Clostermann mentions, in his book "The Great Circus", he saw a
dogfight between a Spitfire of his squadron and an FW 190A-6 piloted
by a certain "Major von Graf", nicknamed "Donald Duck" by the Allies.
The Fw was, according to his book, painted in overall bright yellow
scheme and, curiously...

A couple of P-47 questions... by
Vicente Vazquez
1) When were dorsal fins (fillets?) introduced in production P-47D's?
I know they've been installed in P-47's as Field Modification Kits
but, though I've gone through some books and websites, I can't get to
a conclusion about when they started to be fitted to P-47's in the
production line.

Mitsubishi Zero and the "Ameiro" color ... by

Let me try to post an aviation-related message among this

correct colors for IJN Mitsubishi Zeros. One of them is about the
