High time airframe question by xyzzy
Assuming proper maintanence and a good airframe log/book inspection, are there any concerns about high time airframes, like insurability, etc? My partners and I are looking at a warrior with over 11,000 AFTT.

Flyers, This was part of a post in "Selling my Garmin 296" and decided to make it a separate post. Sorry for the redundancy. Kobra wrote: ...I toasted my engine about 3 weeks ago.

In-Flight Engine Failure by O. Sami Saydjari
Well, it happended. I have owned the plane (Piper Turbo Arrow III) for 3 months and the engine failed during climb out on Tuesday. Altitude was 4400 feet. Luckily, the engine did not entirely quit and I made it to an airport within 10 miles. TBO was 1000 hours away. Dissapointing! When we cut...

Compass trouble by Road Dog
I took my Piper Warrior in for its annual and the mechanic said that the compass card was missing and that he'd have to swing the plane to generate a new one. After swinging it, he claimed that he couldn't get the E-W deviation within the minimum. So he suggested we try "mu" shield (or something)...

VOTE ...HTML or Plain Text??? by Montblack
I was surprised by the acceptance of an HTML post in another thread. I, for one, could read the HTML fine. Others said the same thing. Has the time come for HTML in the newsgroup(s)? My (change is bad - we fear change) vote is no HTML ... for now. I'm being fuddy-duddy with my reason: I get...

Piper doors, why the passenger side? by Nathan Young
First off, this isn't a post to argue the merits of one-door vs. two-doors, so if you want to do that, start your own thread... :) Why does Piper put the door of the plane on the passenger side? I cannot think of one good reason. Would like to hear the group's opinions. OTOH, I can think of...

Best warbird to own by Charles Talleyrand
I'm fantasy shopping for my new warbird or historic aircraft. My requirements are ... - Historic value (rare and interesting aircraft) - Reasonably easy to fly - No turbines and under 12,500 lbs (no type rating needed) - Seats two - Aerobatic - Easy on the eyes

Trial by newspaper by Paul kgyy
I feel sorry for the SW pilots who went through the fence at Midway last week. Now every edition of the local newspapers runs articles by lawyers and journalists second-guessing every decision made on a difficult approach - quartering tail wind, marginal visibility, fair braking, short...

JPI Data Encryption? by CSnyder
Seems sometime last year JPI decided to eliminate the ability of it's scanners to export data in the widely used CSV (comma separated fields) format. When a unit is sent in for upgrade or repair they silently make this change to the firmware. The only thing you can use to plot your data is their...

Best Single Pilot IFR Plane by Charles Talleyrand
There must be people on the newsgroup that fly single pilot IFR on a regular basis. These people have a schedule to make and would rather not miss that schedule unless necessary. These people don't have the need to carry many passengers, but just themselves. My question is for these people...

Left Mag Dead... After Annual??? by three-eight-hotel
So I just got out of a $1900 annual, and stopped by, on Friday, to gas the plane up for a flight to happen this week... I tried to start the plane up (Cessna 172), and it never as much as sputtered. The battery was well charged and it turned over, and over, and over, and over... Never fired...

Avgas price and the light plane ownership by M
Anyone worries about what the rising avgas price to the light plane ownership in the U.S? I have absolutely no doubt that the average avgas price will surpass $5/gallon in about 5 years. We'll probably see a significant drop of GA flying, along with a big drop of the value of used airplanes. ...

Garmin 396 Glitch?? by Jeff B
Has anyone experienced significant "loss of signal" hiccups with their new 396?? Since getting ours a few months ago, we have had several...some lasting 15-20 minutes. System shutdowns/start ups may or may not re-initialize it. THe antenna is unobstructed and in plain view of the sky. An older...

....And just to prove it, I will announce the following to the aviation world: Yesterday, for the first time since I bought Atlas in 2002, EVERYTHING in the panel worked as designed all at the same time! Both radios (one new), both VORs (one new), both GPS's (one new), the transponder (new), the...

Opinions on Cessna 340, 414 and 421 by john szpara
I'm considering buying a plane, and have decided to go with a twin. I understand that there will be more maintenance costs over a single, but I like the safety margin of the second engine. I also like the idea of pressurization, because we have some high mountains out here on the west coast. It...
