New intsrument rating PTS by C J Campbell
There is just about a month before the new instrument rating PTS takes effect on October 1. This is a major re-write with standards for GPS and autopilot coupled approaches (now required if the aircraft is equipped), guidelines for partial panel approaches in aircraft with glass cockpits,...

GPS for airport navigation by John Bell
I think that GPS can be helpful for airport ground navigation and avoiding runway incursions. For some reason, I never see this mentioned in any of the material on runway incursion. It's not perfect, but if you have one in the cockpit it might help you maintain situational awareness on the...

Pre-flight planning really is worth doing. by Roy Smith
Yesterday, I did something I don't get to do much any more -- just headed off on a trip with no particular purpose in mind other than it was a nice day and I wanted to go flying. I looked at a chart and found an airport I'd never been to before, Claremont NH, and off I went. I did enough...

My static system had a leak by Derrick Early
A little while ago I asked if the VSI, altimeter and airspeed instruments should jump when closing the door. The answer is that they should not. We had our static system tested and the mechanic found a leak. As a result, we were getting cabin pressure for altitude our altitude readings. I...

KCNH departure procedure. by Roy Smith
I was in Claremont NH (KCNH) today. The DP reads (per a recent FDC notam; it's different from what's published): DEPARTURE PROCEDU RWY 11: CLIMB VIA HEADING 109 TO 2500 THEN CLIMBING RIGHT TURN DIRECT CNH NDB, CLIMB IN HOLDING TO 3000 BEFORE PROCEEDING ON COURSE. RWY 29: CLIMB VIA HEADING 289...

Dr.Curtiss runs out of his medicine by Toly
Hi folx, Here we go again... now it's ostensibly one of "us" selling his soul to the boulevard press devil for a few greenbacks... "How Hard Is It to Fly a 757 or 767?" http://airsafe.com/journal/v1num16.htm It's an exciting reading... the guy is in "unique position to answer that question",...

2004 Instrument Procedures Handbook by Gene Whitt
Y'all, I had originally planned to post this on ras group but decided to go afield. Found that this group is a haven for old friends. My new medical says that I'm good for two more years and at 80 that's something to shoot for. Got the FAA NEW "Instrument Procedures Handbook". FAA-H-8261-1 (2004)...

similarly named intercepts all in the same FIR by Dan Jacobson
I see the Naha FIR (Okinawa) has intercepts BISIG, BISIS, and BIXAK. Such similarly named intercepts all in the same FIR, while not on the same airways, still seem rather risky. (But what do I know, haven't been on a plane in 10 years, just listen to my scanner.)

IFR & SUA by Larry Richardson
Ok, I just stepped up to a better plane with a certified GPS and am about to go on a cross country (likely IFR). The Direct path takes me across a couple of Restricted Airspace. Should I plan to avoid or file direct and let ATC handle it with the clearance ? Larry.

IFR to & from CLT - Delays and Fees to Expect by David
I'm considering flying from ROA to CLT for a business meeting at the airport itself next Tuesday -- arriving around noon and departing around 16:00. I've not flown G/A to CLT before -- anyone able to advise on the in/out delays (and fees) that I should expect? I'm having a tough time justifying...

WIDOE by Jon Woellhaf
Last Monday (16 Aug 2004) I was on an IFR flight from Oakland, CA to Ogden, UT. About thirty minutes from Ogden, I heard Salt Lake Center call a Lifeguard flight and clear him direct to (what sounded like) widow. The pilot asked for spelling and Center said Whiskey, India, Delta, Oscar, Echo....

IAP through class G by Gary Drescher
Why do some airports with an instrument approach (e.g. HIE) lack a surface Class E to protect the approach? HIE LOC 10 has Class G below 700' AGL, but the MDA is well below that height. A plane can legally fly VFR just below a 700' ceiling along the final approach course, with no way for it to see...

CBAV and Palmnet by Maule Driver
So is CBAV Nexrad offline for good? Seems like I saw something saying that Palmnet is gone at the end of August but I can't verify. Any info or links appreciated. (Sorry if this has been discussed - I've been offline for 2 weeks and can't seem to find any archive info)

where to ask question about approach? by J Haggerty
I went to look up the procedures for this airport, and there are no instrument procedures listed. KPJY = Pinckneyville-Du Quoin in IL? You can ask for a procedure by going to this FAA website; http://avn.faa.gov/index.asp?xml=ifp/index JPH Snowbird wrote: OK, call me slow, but I only just...

Garmin GNS-430 vs. CNX80 by Mike Adams
What's the latest thinking on the GNS-430 vs. the CNX80? I'm planning a panel upgrade and have read all the magazine articles, including the comparison in Aviation Consumer, but it would be interesting to hear from some actual users on how they compare. It seems the general impression is that the...

Is my static port leaking? by Derrick Early
The plane does have an alternate static source vented inside; however, I pushed the valve in to select the exterior port. My guess is that either this is normal or the static pressure system has a leak. "Ron Rosenfeld" wrote in...
