Turbine air start -- too cold? by
Juan Jimenez
The engine on my homebuilt aircraft is a small French turbine, a Microturbo
022 Couguar (one version behind the TRS-18-046). It starts using good ol'
air impingement, which the manual specs out to 145 psi, 1.21 lbs volume.
Now, I always had problems motoring the engine to a high enough RPM where...

canopy breaking tool? by
Russell Duffy
Greetings,
I've been looking for a canopy breaking tool, that would work on a 1/4"
thick canopy. I know the military has had a few of these over the years,
but I haven't been able to locate a used, or surplus tool. I'm betting that
someone makes a tool for this, but I sure can't find one in any...

Flyability of Biplane Flying Boat by
durabol[_2_]
I have been working on a biplane flying boat (similar to some in the
early 1900s). Rough weight estimates a fuselage/tail/controls 200,
Rotax 503/5Gal fuel 150, wings 150, me 225 = 725 gross. The reason for
the biplane configuration is for the large wing area (250sq.ft) I feel
will be needed to...

Petition for keeping one Concorde flying by
Paul Sengupta
Don't know if you know about this, but the petition to keep Concorde
flying is going to change. The emphasis is now going to be on keeping
one airworthy to be used at airshows, etc.
If you want to sign the petition (anyone that signed the old one will
automatically be carried over to the new one)...

Forward Swept Wings by
Canuck Bob
I am working slowly on an evolving Fly5k design and considering a
swept forwrd wing. Does anyone know anything about thier design?
Also would anyone have experience with the Sisler Cygnet, Andreasson
BA-7, or Pottier's Bleu Citron designs. The Cygnet seems to be well
thought of but I don't know...

RV-9A's wing with Rotax 914? by
Shin Gou
Looking at RV-9A's specification (weight, engine, etc.), I think a
Rotax 914 can power it very well, may give a better performance than
O-235. However, the problem is Rotax is far to light to be installed
on RV-9A.
So I just can't help thinking, well, why not a new design around
RV-9A's wing and...

Garmin 195 screen problem by
BPattonsoa
I have a Garmin 195 that had its screen replaced about one year ago after about
two years use. Departing Sedona yesterday, the screen started to fade. Since
I had three waypoints to get through the mess around Palmdale, the muck was
thick, centers were turning down flight following, and my ship...

AN ENGINE FOR HOMEBUILDERS by
Bob
As of 2009 Amateur aircraft builders are largely limited to various
Volkswagen conversions. While such conversions may be as large as
140cid (2332cc) when using a Type I crankcase -- and up to 170cid
(2884cc) if you begin with the heavier Type IV -- the SUSTAINABLE
output of these engines is...

Pumping fuel backwards through an electric fuel pump by
Greg Reid
I've installed a 12-gallon fuel cell aux tank in the tailcone of my
4-place conventional low-wing plane -- intended for go-fast trimming
when flying solo more than for its extra fuel capacity. As you know,
a typical 4-place is terribly nose-heavy with only front-seat
passengers and no baggage. ...

A Simple Auto Engine Conversion by
[email protected]
I was thumbing through a catalog from Speedway Motors. They advertise
a magneto-type distributor. Assuming you didn't come across a
thrashed race engine with magnetos, couldn't someone put together an
engine worthy of aircraft use, by simply 1) ordering an aftermarket
engine with fuel injection,...

Best small balloon material for containing helium? by
John Doe
After a little research, I noticed there is a lot of float time
difference between regular balloons and aluminum balloons. Is there an
easy to obtain, very light material which will contain helium for a
long time? I'm thinking the size of a beach ball or maybe a little
larger. I don't mind fussing...
