IFR or IFR Refresher? by
Rod Madsen
It's been discussed here before. They are both good but slightly different.
I prefer IFR, and its got more pages.

How much protection on approach? by
Michael
How much protection do we have on an off-field VOR approach? I was
always under the impression that as long as the equipment was within
tolerances for an airborne VOR receiver check (+/- 6 degrees) and the
approach was flown to PTS tolerances (no more than 3/4 scale
deflection) it was impossible...

First couple hours of real CFII dual given.... by
Blaine
An enlightening experience first of all. I figured since I had just
got the second 'I' on CFII, and since I have given plenty of regular
dual to Private students, I wouldn't have too much of a problem.
The guy I flew with is working on a phase of the WINGS program and
wanted several hours of hood...

Editorial Page by
John Purner
Finally!
I've wanted to add an Editorial page to The $100 Hamburger website since we
started it in 1996. After eight years four books and several reprinting of
"The $100 Hamburger" book, I've found the time to do it. In additon to our
views, there is a Letters to the Editor section. I truly hope...

filing with DUATS by
Ditch
Anyone experiencing problems with this? Aside from the ADIZ and TFR crap.
I filed an IFR from LVK to SAC yesterday via duats and the clearance never came
available. The tower told me that only about half of the flight plans filed via
DUATS come up.
I found it strange. Back in 1999 when I was flying...

Hi All,
I tried plugging through the google newsgroups, with no luck.
I am currently a instrument *student*, doing my Multi-IFR stuff. I'm
Canadian, and some of this stuff isn't really covered in any of our
regulations or material from what I can see (unless im missing something),
and its a more...

Joystick calibration problem with On Top 8.0 by
KC Jones
When I go to the calibration page of On Top v. 8.0 I don't see a red
or green dot, but my joystick IS selected under the Flight Controls
section and it works ok in the Control Panel Gaming section of Win 98.
I therefore know the joystick is working, but something in the On Top
program seems to be...

CFII question... by
Ditch
Does a CFII have to be instrument current to give instrument instruction in VFR
conditions? Just curious...and I don't have a set-O-regs handy at the moment
otherwise I'd get off my lazy butt and look it up. Thanks...

How do you interpret... by
EDR
When filling IFR, there are two boxes you put numbers in, AIRSPEED and
TIME ENROUTE.
These go back to the old days, but are still applicable today.
AIRSPEED, as the name implies, tells ATC how fast your airplane is
going through the air.
TIME ENROUTE tells ATC when to expect you at your...

Va and turbulent air penetration speed. by
Doug
Kershner's "The Advanced Pilot's Flight Manual" has the following
definition for Va.
Va - The maneuvering speed. This is the maxiumu speed at a particular
weight at which the controls may be fully deflected without
overstressing the airplane.
Now, Va is commonly taught as turbulent air...

Lost comm altitude? by
Roy Smith
The Dutchess Four Departure has lost comm instructions which read, "If
radio contact is not established/lost for more than two minutes after
departing, proceed on course and climb to 5000 feet. Ten minutes after
departure, climb to requested altitude/flight level".
Let's say my clearance is...

Winter Cloud Tops by
O. Sami Saydjari
This is somewhat related to the optimal altitudes question, but I
thought I would start a new thread here...
What are the typical cloud tops at for winter flying--if there is any
such thing as typical. I would venture to guess that tops are below
10,000 ft 80% of the time. I am talking here...

I am planning a long cross country where I am trying to minmiize the

possible). The shortest route would take me straight over the top of
Detroit and Clevland and Pittsburg (I am flying from Central Wisconsin
to Washington D.C. to...

Picking Optimal Altitudes by
O. Sami Saydjari
When planning a flight against the wind, how to you pick the best
altitude when trying to minimize flight time?
If I read my performance charts correctly, my aircraft (Piper Turbo
Arrow III -- service ceiling 20,000 ft) seems to gain about 2 nts of
*true* airspeed for every 1000 feet you go up. ...
