How to get the most from VFR XC's for IFR requirements? by gregg
Hi all, I've begun my IFR taining and at the same time, racking up the cross country hours required for the ticket. I'm wondering what things I could do in these strictly VFR XC's that would help me learn/gain insight or facility with the IFR world. So far I have: 1) My CFII suggested I plan...

How to tell when approach plate updated? by kevmor
If an approach plate comes out, then it's NOTAM'ed for some changes, I make the changes to it. But then the next few cycles, those changes aren't implemented yet and are still NOTAM'ed. Instead of making the changes to each cycle again, can you tell by the Amendment # if it's been updated?

How wide is an NDB approach course? by Jose
What is the protected area under an NDB approach course? Since the course guidance is cruder than an ILS, I'd expect it would be wider, but how much wider? I ask also in the context of when I should consider myself "established" on course (for purposes of descent). Jose -- He who laughs,...

HVN VOR-A -- why such a high MDA? by Roy Smith
The VOR-A at New Haven (http://www.myairplane.com/databases/approach/pdfs/00671VG2.PDF) has an MDA of 720, which is about 300 feet higher than the towers in the area. The VOR-2 (http://www.myairplane.com/databases/approach/pdfs/00671VG2.PDF) gets you down to 380, and has to deal with the same...

I can finally read... by Wizard of Draws
....something other than IFR oral related material. Since the weather was crappy yesterday and scrapped the checkride, and today and tomorrow were forecast to be more of the same, I drove to Andrews-Murphy, NC (KRHP) to get the oral portion taken care of. We talked for about 2 hours with most of...

I can teach anyone how to get what they want out of life. by reynArd
"I can teach anyone how to get what they want out of life. The problem is I can't find anybody who can tell me what they want." -- Mark Twain "Today people in America can become whatever they want. Trouble is most don't know what they want." -- Earl Nightingale What do you want? Are you sick of the...

I don't know how to flight plan any more by Paul Tomblin
I'm flying to Pittsburgh this weekend, and as usual I'm going to KAGC (Allegheny County). But for a change, instead of taking the club's Lance I'm going to be taking the Dakota - and unlike the Lance, the Dakota has a Garmin 530W in it. Now normally, I'd pull out the route I have on my PDA in...

I hate turn coordinators by john hawkins
Why is the turn coordinator so popular? I find the presentation similar to the artificial horizon is poor. The good old turn needle never leads to any confusion. If the silly little airplane was replaced by a needle and dog houses, I think I'd like it better. The 4 minute needle gives superior...

I have a dream. A GPS/SBAS/QZSS dream ! In honour of MLK day. by macpacheco
I have a dream. All IIA satellites retired. All IIF satellites in orbit. L2C signal set fully healthy with 19 operational satellites (12 IIF + 7 IIRM). L5 signal set healthy even though only 12 IIF satellites are broadcasting it. But their ranging signals are as perfect as predicted, not enough for...

I hope the FAA has a very fat wallet by FUBAR
I hope the FAA has a very fat wallet LEXINGTON, Ky. - The lone air traffic controller on duty the morning Comair Flight 5191 crashed cleared the jet for takeoff, then turned his back to do some "administrative duties" as the aircraft veered down the wrong runway, a federal investigator said...

I love being instrument rated. :) by Dane Spearing
Out here in the Rocky Mountain states, those of us who are instrument rated rarely get a chance to practice our skills in real IMC since "real IMC" usually implies either thunderstorms (summer) or severe icing condiditions and blowing snow (winter). However, today I was given a real treat by the...

I passed the checkride, now need a good GPS and passenger headset by C. Osbourne
YIPPEE! I'm now a private pilot! I took and passed, the private pilot checkride on Tuesday. What a relief! It wasn't nearly as bad as I thought I'd be, and went very well. Now I need an aviation GPS and 'Guest Headset', and I'm hoping that readers of this list will have recommendations about...

I hate cross-posting, but just this once I will give in to the temptation. The rec.aviation newsgroups have become useless. There is very little "meat" in the postings...sushidot is about the only poster interested in learning anything. If anyone is looking for me, I hang out in the AOPA Forum,...
