Vernal Equinox by
John Shelton
Today, in celebration of the arrival of the Vernal Equinox, I am going to
make a sacrifice in a pagan rite that goes back into prehistoric times. I
have chosen for the sacrificial victims a steer and a potato (hamburger and
fries). Tomorrow, I am going to fly my sailplane for the first time of...

How can I communicate with my Volkslogger using the USB port?
I have a USB cable that has a com port end on it but I can't get the

Thanks

Property Tax on gliders in California? by
Mark Navarre
Have received a letter from the tax assessor requesting location and value info
on my glider for the purpose of property tax assessment. I am curious, why
now? Since I have owned the glider almost 5 years already, I wonder if it took
that long for the County/State to catch up on the paperwork.
The...

Winpilot, Arrival Altitude vs McReady setting ? by
JVAS
When running Winpilot (ADV) on my IPAQ - Changing the McReady setting
affects only the Arrival altitude on my Home airport or on my final glide
airport, while when running Winpilot XP on my PC, changing the McReady
setting affects the Arrival Altitude on all airports shown in the map.
Why this...

FS Cambridge CAV-II by
WDM
FS: Cambridge CAV-II $250 USD
It is presently installed and working great. I just need a mechanical
vario for back up instead of an electric vario. I will consider trades
for a good 80mm Winter Vario.

Transponder Installation in Discus A, B, CS by
Rick Fuller
Has anyone in the group installed a transponder in
a Discus A, B, or CS? Are there any installation pitfalls I should know about
if I install a Microair 2000? I've read recent articles
in Soaring mag and would like to know specific issues
for the Discus. Any optimal antenna locations? Any

Winch Physics by
Bob Johnson
This has been covered in these pages before, but it may be timely to
post it again in view of the coming fuel price squeeze and the increased
interest in winching.
This Excel spreadsheet explains mathematically why a winch system
comprised of lighter linear (rope) and rotational elements...

Winching - Cable danger. by
W.J. \(Bill\) Dean \(U.K.\).
In discussions about winch design and construction, I think not enough
attention has been given to protecting the driver from the cable.
This is a report about one accident (B.G.A. 1991/20):
"At the top of a normal winch launch the weak link failed and a fast moving
"snake" of cable fell onto the...

Winch dangers in general by
Bob Johnson
It wouldn't hurt to repeat this message also -- any location thinking of
going to a winch operation would do well to absorb the lessons in Derek
Piggott's "Ground Launches" book. This 83-page book distills over forty
years of European and British winch experience. The author has had over
10,000...

Non-USA DAFIF files - Where to find by
Michael
US DAFIF files can be downloaded from the FFA and processed
for PDA application by this nice free tool called "airspace.exe"
(onethousand thanks for it).
Where can I find similar high content and up-to-date DAFIF
files for Australia and Europe for same processing?
Thanks for every hint.
