Problem with auto alternators by abripl
One known problem is that aircraft engines turn CCW looking at the prop but auto alternators have cooling fins optimized for CW. But thats not apparently as much a problem as the pulley nut potentially comming loose. For CW rotation the engine torque will tend to tighten the pulley nut but for CCW...

Flexible air intake hose by abripl
I am using 3.5" dia Aeroduct-CAT ducting for a short distance directly from my intake plenum under my fuselage to the carburetor. The problem with the CAT is that the wire reinforcing and fabric do not give radially well, so it transmits some engine vibration to the fuselage. I would like to find...

Looking for a ready made 13VDC electronic switch, that switches a circuit on when voltage reaches 13+VDC - or a simple circuit. It would be for optional devices I want to go on when the engine is charging and off when not charging. Any sources? Not sure what to Google...

Real time continuous Prop balancing by abripl
This thread is not about how to balance a prop or shop balancing machines. Did anyone use BalanceMasters device bolted on their ultralight prop? These devices apparently balance the prop continuously as you fly. Similar devices are used on truck wheels - see www.BalanceMasters.com and...

Altitude ceiling engine choices by abripl
Builders who plan to fly in mountains needing higher altitude should consider their engine choices. Typical Lycoming low compression engines have a limit of about 13,500 feet. You need higher compression engines or turbocharging for higher altitudes. I tested my high compression (10.5) Franklin...

Weigh scales by abripl
I sold my mechanical Ruggles weigh scales and now am trying some digital automotive racing scales that are just a little more expensive. The scales I found are actually less expensive than normal racing scales but the real advantage is that they can be sold individually rather than a set of four....

Microair Transponder brass screws? by abripl
Anybody know a source for metric brass screws for the Microair transponder? The ones that came with it are steel and I need to cut down on magnetic interference. I think they are 12mm x 4mm dia x 0.8mm pitch.

Your free AvGas fillup at Dodge Center MN (TOB) July Sunday 31, AM by abripl
Hi, Just returned from Oshkosh home to Pierre SD. I filled up at Dodge Center MN this AM and not being familiar with the self serve gas fillup, I did not hang up the pump handle properly. Somebody after me continued pumping another $150 on my credit card ($200 instead of about $50). My...

High altitude & RPM by abripl
At higher altitudes (non-turbo piston engine) is it more efficient for power/economy to use medium or max RPM? There is much less air there and if the RPM is too high will it be starving more than at lower RPM?

Parts from general sources. by abripl

Problems with Rapco dry vacuum pumps. by abripl
Just a warning for those who might consider purchasing Rapco dry vacuum pumps. Make sure that your engine does not leak oil. If there is any chance of an oil drip onto the Rapco vacuum pump it may eventually stop working. The connecting shaft is vented to air. But if some oil drops on the shaft it...

Transponder andtenna radiation by [email protected]
