New IFR Currency requirements...! by
Dan[_1_]
So what does everyone think about the proposed new IFR currency
requirements? The major changes seem to be that 1 hour of cross-
country time will be required, along with six approaches, consisting
of BOTH precision and non-precision, and two types of holds.
Some of this can be completed in a...

I don't know how to flight plan any more by
Paul Tomblin
I'm flying to Pittsburgh this weekend, and as usual I'm going to KAGC
(Allegheny County). But for a change, instead of taking the club's Lance
I'm going to be taking the Dakota - and unlike the Lance, the Dakota has a
Garmin 530W in it. Now normally, I'd pull out the route I have on my PDA
in...

VOR approach- when to descend from the FAF by
Terence Wilson
When flying a VOR approach in which the FAF is defined by the VOR, is
it appropriate to start the descent to the MAP, or next stepdown,
immediately after overflying the VOR or should I wait until I have
positive course guidance for the final approach segment?
I ask because it can sometimes take...

Help understanding Aspen VOR/DME approach by
SimGuy
The plate is here-
http://www.airnav.com/depart?http://204.108.4.16/d-tpp/0608/05889VDGC.PDF
While trying to fly the approach in the sim I flew to the MAP with
relative ease but had trouble getting low enough to make the runway
without getting too hot. Looking at the plate it seems a drop of...

Direct to intermediate approach fix? by
Roy Smith
Yesterday, we had filed /G (with a CNX-80). Our clearance was KPOU IGN
V157 HAARP -D- KHPN. Nothing out of the ordinary there.
HPN was using the ILS-16 (http://204.108.4.16/d-tpp/0612/00651I16.PDF) We
were on V157 somewhere north of VALRE when we got "fly heading 200 to
intercept, um, no,...

Best Option for Private Pilot to Multi Commercial Instrument Ratings by
Hudson Valley Amusement
I am currently a ASEL private pilot and would like to get to Multi Commercial
Instument ASAP. I can dedicate full time to this and would like your opinions
on the best way to go about it.
There seem to be 2 schools of thought -
1- get my instrument and commercial in a Single Engine, then get my...

Alternate same as departure? by

Can you file the departure airport as the alternate?
Two airports in the middle of nowhere 40 miles apart. I can't think of
another reasonable option.

First "real" hold (long) by
Dan Luke
Yesterday, for the first time since I got the instrument rating 5 years
ago, I had to hold for real.
It was a reposition flight from Mobile Downtown to Pensacola to pick up
an Angel Flight. When I checked the weather at home at 6am, fog was
reported everywhere on the central Gulf Coast - the...

Tstorm avoidance by
PaulH
I have a fairly new IFR rating and am wondering how much help to
expect from ATC on Tstorm avoidance. Will they suggest re-routing or
do you have to request it based on visual, FSS, or stormscope
location?

GNS430W: Parallel offset course feature by
Peter R.
Just picked up my aircraft with the GNS430W upgrade and was reading the
manual to see what new features are now included. In there I discovered the
feature that allows the pilot to purposely fly a parallel offset course
anywhere from 1 to 99 miles. The only tedious characteristic of this...

Q about lost comms on weird clearance by
Paul Tomblin
I normally fly out of Rochester NY, which is towered and class C. And 99%
of the time my clearance route is "Vectors as filed". But yesterday I had
to stop off at Batavia to pick up something, and then continue on to
Goderich Ontario. Since it's just easier to be on an IFR flight plan...

Non existent VOR by
john smith
I flew from Ohio to Florida early this week. The third leg was from
Valdosta (KVLD) GA to West Palm Beach (KPBI) FL.
My originally filed route was amended twice before I got 25 miles. JAX
Center gave me PHK (Pahokee VOR) as my final fix before KPBI.
As I was nearing the east shore of Lake...

Can EFIS / EFMS lead to removing basic safety checks? by
Jim Carter
This question is the result of the wrong runway issue at LEX last
weekend.
Not having flown an EFIS or EFMS myself, I'm not sure of the "into
position checklist items". For example, in a standard steam-gauge panel
one of the last things we check is to align the directional gyro with
the runway...

Full deflection = missed approach ??? by
pgbnh
It is common wisdom, and often common sense, that if a full deflection of a
CDI (or GS) is experienced, a missed approach is to be flown. But a lot of
people seem to think that it is REQUIRED. I have had a CFII tell me it is
required. But I can not find anything in FAR or AIM that states such...

More info on GNS 430/530 WAAS upgrade by

I recently made an inquiry to Garmin regarding their new requirement
that GNS 430/530 owners pre-order the WAAS upgrade prior to November
2005 to guarantee the $1500 price their marketing department has been
stating for the past 2 years...
Keeping in mind the WAAS upgrade for these boxes are...

Circle to land question by
A Lieberman
Last week, I was doing approaches in actual IMC, and returning back to MBO
(Madison, MS), I broke out right at minimum ceilings 4.8 miles DME from the
JAN VOR. Ceilings were just above 900 feet. Missed minimums are 5 DME an
900 feet ceilings (NOTAM raised it from 860 to 900).
The approach takes...

argh -- flight plan routes by

ventmode
I am an inexperienced instrument pilot and I just don't understand why
we file routes on our flight plans at all!
I never get what I filed, anyway, and it's not uncommon that the route
I actually get shares not a single waypoint with what I filed.
It is an interesting game to try to...

airport, and was issued a clearance to follow a star that led to a navaid
near my destination. However, the star was for the class C airport, not...

It's been awhile since I flew VFR, and having taken a cursory look

I can take a VFR-only airplane on a local VFR trip with a PP-rated
safety pilot on board,...
