GPS approach question by
Matt Whiting
I was flying this weekend to maintain my instrument currency and came
across a GPS approach unlike any I'd seen thus far. Then again, I'm
pretty new to GPS approaches so I'm still finding new stuff fairly often.
I was flying approaches into Wellsvill, NY (ELZ) and was setting up for
the GPS RWY...

Approach plates on pocket PC? by
paul kgyy
I'm looking for the ability to just load and read approach plates on my
Ipaq. I know that Control Vision has their Pocket Plates, but with a
Garmin 430 I don't need geo-referencing, etc etc.
Anyone know of simpler setups available? I'd guess there should also
be a way to limit what you load by...

Why would someone choose to fly VFR on top? by
Ron Garret
Subject line says it all. In light of the fact that VFR on top subjects
you to both VFR and IFR constraints, why would anyone ever choose to fly
VFR on top? I can only think of two possible reasons:
1. There happens to be clear air at a +500 foot altitude and not at the
corresponding...

legal to use home-printed IFR plates? by
Marty Ross
I've never seen the/a definitive answer to this question:
Are there any negative legal ramifications of using IFR plates obtained
from, for instance, the AOPA website, so long as the plate is current
(they're now printing the date range of the plate's validity in the
margins), printed...

TACAN by

Is there an on-line directory of TACAN locations? For example, the FAA
lists on
http://www.faa.gov/atpubs/LID/A_B.htm
a TACAN on Bald Mountain Nevada, with designation GBM. However, there
is more than one Bald Mountain in Nevada. I'm looking for lon/lat.

IAP without inbound course? by
Y'All,
Received this email for which I have come to the group for an answer.
Dear Gene,
I was recently on an instrument checkride for the Military, and the
instructor asked me a bonus question: "can you have a IAP with no published
inbound course." I couldn't think of any scenarios, maybe you...

SE airplanes in clouds - near freezing level by

Those of you, who frequently fly SE airplanes without deicing
equipment, without turbo or second engine but use their IR Ticket to

What are your strategies to cope with the weather ?

I hate cross-posting, but just this once I will give in to the temptation.
The rec.aviation newsgroups have become useless. There is very little "meat"
in the postings...sushidot is about the only poster interested in learning
anything. If anyone is looking for me, I hang out in the AOPA Forum,...

GPS for NDB IAF on ILS? by
Jim Burns
I don't have my AIM here at work, and I'm on dial up, so I won't attempt to
download it, but I'm looking at the ILS 32 into KMQY Smyrna TN. It says ADF
REQUIRED which I understand is to identify the IAF which is the SWZ NDB not
associated with a marker beacon, inside the outer marker. This is the...

Backup plates on PDA by

There have been a number of threads in this and other forums about which

expect...

most of eastern Massachussetts airspace closed in July by
Christopher C. Stacy
The Democratic National Convention is coming to Boston in July.
The Boston Globe today reported that the FAA is going to restrict
all air traffic within 30 nm of Boston: no private aircraft will
be allowed to operate in the airspace. The main thrust of the
story was that this restriction included...

Good AI backup, wish me luck by
Robert M. Gary
After having both a vac pump failure and an AI failure (not on the
same flight :) ) I decided its really time for a backup. I always
consider my Mooney to be an "IFR anytime" type of plane, in that I
consider it a solid IFR platform. When the vac pump goes out alarms
starting sounding, my voice...

Where is approach good about multiple approaches and clearances in the air? by
Andrew Gideon
I'm no freight dog or corporate pilot with dozens of approaches to minimums
each day. For me, as with many GA pilots I expect, maintaining *real*
currency involves explicit practice.
That's fine; I enjoy it. But I'd like to try some new places.
The issue is that I'd like to try some new places...

My first big IFR mistake... by
Ben Jackson
I made my first big IFR mistake. I fixed my intermittant ADF with only
a few more hours of training to go until my checkride. My glorious plan
to label it INOP (making it an expensive combination multi-channel timer
and partial panel heading memory aid) has been thwarted by a little tuner
cleaner...

Vectored past the localizer by
Doug
Several times, while under IFR flight plan and radar services, I have
been vectored to intercept the localizer and the controller was late
in turning me into the localizer. This usually happens when I need
about a 90 degree turn to the localizer. I have decided not to wait
for his vector and just...
