Dauntless Software/Safelog/Poison Pills by
Mitty
Until recently I have been quite a fan of Dauntless Software's products, having
used both their written test prep packages and their Safelog product. I have
recommended them here.
All good things come to an end, however. Beginning in May, the "free" Safelog
upgrades come with a poison pill....

Daytron clock? by
Hankal
Daytron Clock.
The stem from my clock fell off. Looking at the ends where the stem meets are
tiny indentations like miniature gears. I have no idea how they fit together.
See no break. What holds them together? Should I just use glue to join then
together?

DCPilots for Washington, DC area pilots by
Bill
There's a new email list for Washington, DC area pilots and pilots who
fly into Washington, DC's airspace: DCPilots, www.dcpilots.net.
This list is a place to exchange thoughts about favorite destinations
and to find other pilots to fly with to those destinations. If you
want to talk about the...

Dead telephones aren't much fun by
C J Campbell
I took a student up yesterday to practice holding on the localizer in IMC
conditions. Winds were gusting to over 20 knots and of course it was bumpy
in there. He struggled with it for about 45 minutes (boy, does that bring
back memories), but he learned a lot about holding, localizers,...

Decent into Cleveland by
john cop
Have been inactive for many years.
About 20 years ago, when flying up from the south, I got suckered in.
The tops slowly rose untill I was flying at over 15,000 (Mooney 201)
near Cleveland, It was clear on top and the temp was in the mid 40s
on the ground, and the freezing level was high enough...

Declare an Emergency early and often! by
tscottme
OK just kidding. I finished reading the great post about a failed vaccum in
IMC and the happy outcome. I wanted to post this message to share something
I learned some time ago when I participated in a university research
program.
The researcher was investigating pilot's decision to declare...

Declared "minimum fuel" by
O. Sami Saydjari
My POH says that I have 72 gals of useable fuel (Piper Turbo Arrow III).
How do I really know if it can burn all 72 gals before running out?
Could it be 70? 68? Does the number change if I am climbing,
descending, cruising, or in turbulence? I would imagine it would be
affected by attitude.
I...

definition of "dual controls" by
Lee Elson
91.109 prohibits some types of instruction without "fully functioning
dual controls". Can anyone point to an FAA source for how this phrase
is defined? While throw over yokes are dealt with in 91.109, what
about dual brakes and rudders?

Definition of simulated instrument conditions by
bsalai
Does anyone know if Simulated Instrument Conditions is defined anywhere?
The reason for the question is whether one can log instrument time, say
at night, when you don't look outside, but don't wear foggles or a hood?
I can't find anything in the rules that defines simulated...

Delays getting into Newark International? Go VFR. by
Peter R.
Heard this interesting series of exchanges today while flying down to
Teterboro, NJ. Weather in the NY area was VFR, but I was IFR. For some
reason, arrivals into Newark International were being stacked up in holds
despite the VFR weather.
ATC: Continental XXX, have your hold instructions for...

Delta plus ATL equals huge waste by
DrunkKlingon
(clipped off a blog 4/16/05)
Ponder this thought?
You have in ATL a new tax funded 5th runway with giant new FAA ATCT just
to see the fifth runway plus huge layers of additional FAA Air Traffic
staffing and kingdoms for "additional" airspace needs.
(and to promote and hide incompetent women and...

Departing IFR at SMO w/ Tower Closed by
Dan
Ok, here is a hypothetical question about departing from Santa Monica
and about IFR departures at uncontrolled fields in general. Suppose it
is after 9pm (the tower is closed) but before 11pm (departures still
permitted). Assuming that the field is IFR, what would be the proper
way to obtain...

Departing KJAN Landing KMBO -- Video by
[email protected]
Today's flight from KJAN Jackson MS returning home to KMBO Madison MS
with the hopes the Nav2 is fixed.
Amazing to see how much difference in weather can be seen in a less
then five minute flight.
Small things entertain me. Video'd some "sightseeing" on my 1 1/2
mile taxi to runway...

Departure Procedure jStumper Question by
[email protected]
Take a look at Salmon Idaho KSMN, Ahehu 1 RNAV Dept (Obstacle). I
realize few aircraft are equipped to fly this, however;
1. Notice the "at 200 kt" requirement for some waypoints. Is this
TAS, GS, or IAS? And a reference please if you know of one.
2. Why is the stipulation "at" instead of...

Departure Question by
VOR-DME
Thanks to all for previous helpful replies.
Here's a departure question. (Those who do not fly real airplanes under
IFR need not feel compelled to reply):
I'm departing a non-towered field IFR, let's stay East Coast, and say
Bennington (KDDH), departing eastbound. There is a published departure...
