Cell service from balloons legal in the cockpit? by
Rob
I want Nexrad and satellite imagery and METARs and TAFs live on my PDA
while I'm flying, like I now have them on the ground when I'm near a
wi-fi connection. How long will it be until I can get wireless voice
and internet connectivity that's legal for use in the air?
Maybe when it comes it'll...

Wing aspect ratio vs. airspeed ? by
[email protected]
Today I did some volunteer work, screening potential entries into a
high school science fair. Lots of interesting experiments, but one in
particular caught my eye:
The student had created an RC plane out of styrofoam, balsa wood and an
electrical pusher prop. Now the experiment consisted of...

Nasa Icing courses by
Jim Burns
As many of you probably know, recent midwest weather has been a steady
stream of low overcast, misty, and foggy days prohibiting most VFR flight
and making IFR flights a spin of the icing roulette wheel. I thought it may
be a good opportunity for us to review NASA's icing online...

Splurging on Your Plane by
Marco Leon
Was looking at this beauty of an Arrow featured in Pipers magazine
(www.4979S.com). According to the article, the guy spent over $170,000
updating the thing and boy does it show. It got me wondering about other
examples so I figured I'd ask the most vocal group I...

OT - Best Business Credit Card? by
Jay Honeck
We've had a company VISA card for many years. It has no annual fees, we
never pay interest -- but we also don't "get" anything out of using it,
either. In the past we've bumped up against the credit limit during the
month, and the company (now called "Chase") has been very slow to increase
the...

Poll: What is the Preferred Format for Aviation Video Download by
John T
I share a number of flying videos on my web site in both Windows Media and
Real Video formats. Frankly, I'm tiring of spending the time to render both
high- and low-bandwidth versions of each video in two formats (making four
files for each video), so I'm considering using a single format for...

Post-Mission Projects by

Jay's comment about Iowa City and Mormon Trek Road reminded me of a few
projects that I have been thinking about for when I return to the good
ol' US of A.
One was an aerial photographic survey of the Mormon Trail, along with
some ground shots, documenting what is left of the trail. It is...

media misunderstanding of aviation isn't limited to the US by

This was on the front page of news.bbc.co.uk today. While the article
does give quotes from officials stating that the photo is an illusion,
the implication of the writer seems to be that the officials aren't
being entirely truthful. Just look at...

After the first trip around the pattern I was told that they were not allowing any pattern work.
