A tower-induced go-round by Jay Honeck
Today we experienced a new first, when the tower controller at Jefferson City, Missouri decided to cut a Cessa 172 in front of me on a short right base, *after* clearing me to land on Rwy 30. Incredulous, I slowed as much as possible, and watched as the 172 (who was several hundred feet above us)...

limit of trim = limit of travel? by Mxsmanic
Are the limits of control surface movements produced by setting trim to its extremes also usually the absolute limits of travel for those surfaces, or is it usually possible to move them further with movement of the yoke? Or does this vary significantly from one aircraft design to another?

Wow - heard on the air... (long) by Nathan Young
Today I flew RST (Rochester, MN) to 3CK (Chicago-Lake in the Hills). As I neared Chicago I was listening to 120.55, which is ORD approach for the North side. This was around 6pm, which is a pretty busy time for approach, lots of arrivals and departures in the ORD area. During the 15 minutes...

Get Rid Of Warbirds At Oshkosh by RST Engineering
I'm prejudiced. Of course I'm prejudiced. In 5000+ flight hours, I've never come as close to a midair as I did at Oshkosh 1999. Oshkosh Tower: "BlueOnBlue Cessna, number three for runway 27. Ercoupe put it on the numbers. Flight of three T6s, cross over runway 27, right downwind for runway...

Harrison Ford Mistakenly Lands Husky On KSNA Taxiway by Larry Dighera
Is it time for venerated pilot Harrison Ford to ground himself for less than adequate judgment skills to act as Pilot In Command? The runway is the one with the big "20L" painted on its near-end. This ignominious incident is worse than Senator Inhoff's landing on a taxiway because there was a...

Boeing 747 & 777 autoland in crosswind certification video - impressive! by Alt Beer
Anyone here ever landed in such a strong crosswind? Found this posted to another group. This is a great video of 747 and 777 doing auto land certification crosswind landings, the 3rd and 4th shot are the best. It takes a minute to download and get through the credits but its worth it. ...

Officials Weighed Shooting at Errant Plane By LARA JAKES JORDAN, Associated Press Writer 37 minutes ago As a wayward Cessna flew deep in restricted airspace, national security officials were on the phone discussing whether to implement the last line of defense: shooting it down. The single-engine...

MSNBC Reporting on GA Security Threat by Scott Schluer
http://msnbc.com/news/993760.asp?0cv=CB10 Seems to be a little more well written and objective than most articles on this subject. They mentioned AOPA's Airport Watch program among other things. They also have a picture of that C-172 hanging from that building in Florida (it was Florida, right)?...

MDW Overrun - SWA by Rick
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-051208midway,1,5533660.story?co ll=chi-news-hed&ctrack=1&cset=true Sadly there's one fatality, the first in SWA's history. I've driven past that intersection many times, and it's partly exhilarating and partly terrifying to have the jets take off so...

Simulators by birdog[_2_]
A bit of neophite comment on simulators. Some years ago I bought a Microsoft simulator, played with it a while and relegated it to a young friend. I'll say this - I wish I had this when I first started chasing instruments for certification. The first major hurdle, at least in my case, was...

Gliders in the Grand Canyon by Mxsmanic
If there were no airspace restrictions, would it be possible/safe to fly gliders in the Grand Canyon? There's not much of a place to land in the canyon, of course, but I don't know if there are thermals or something (?) that would allow a glider to climb back up out of the canyon after...

Get a ferry permit, or just fly it? by Paul Tomblin
If you've got a small problem with your plane, do you bother with a ferry permit, or do you just fly it if you think it's safe? Hypothetical: Say your (shared) plane has gotten some damage, say for instance a wingtip strobe/nav light assembly got scraped off against a hangar while it was being...
