A Level 1 AOA clarification by
Ramapriya
If my understanding is correct, an aircraft stalls beyond that AOA
which, when increased any further, produces no (further) lift. If
correct, would it be logical to infer that an aircraft's stalling AOA:
a. is dependent on its airspeed, and is independent of its weight and
weight distribution,...

Just checking in...how's everyone been? by
Jay Honeck[_2_]
So I've been contacted by half a dozen folks, telling me that my absence was
the topic of a rather lively thread here -- so I thought I'd pop in for a
peek at my old stomping ground. How's everyone been?
No, we're not dead. On September 4th, after over ten years of daily
postings on these...

Busy airports and small GA by
Mxsmanic
What is the largest/busiest airport you've flown into or out of in a small GA
aircraft as a private pilot, and was it IFR or VFR? What was the attitude of
the ATC in the area towards pilots like yourself moving about in an area
normally dominated by airliners and commercial flights?

Things I Would Like To See by
Panglos
I would like to see ATC require at least one controller in 5000 to have
a pilots license and a minimal amount of aviating ability or knowledge.
I would also like to see airports start operating based on the
operational needs of pilots and aircraft; not what the new neighbors
want. It would be nice...

Great aviation museum by
Viperdoc
Just spent the day at the Evergreen Aviation Museum in McMinnville, OR.
(around an hour SW of Portland)
It is an unbelievable facility, and rivals the NASM in terms of the displays
and collection. The original Spruce Goose is the main feature, but they have
a B-17, B-25, A-26, F-100, F4U, etc....

Security at a class D tower by
Dallas
I toured the new state of the art tower at Addison airport last week and
was struck by all the security measures they employed.
The entire complex and parking lot was surrounded by a dense wrought iron
fence with a nasty "fish hook" shaped sharp pointed curve at the top. An
intercom opened the...

If there were 25 million active GA pilots... by
Dan Luke
....in the USA instead of 400,000 or so:
There would be GA airports *everywhere*. They would be like beehives on the
day before Thanksgiving.
You could rent a T hangar for less than the cost of a 1 br apartment.
The accident rate would be about the same but the fatal accident rate would
be lower...

OSH Go Arounds by
jsmith
The "Go Around... NOW" thread go me to thinking about how to properly
execute a go-around at OSH AirVenture.
Last year I had to execute one after the aircraft I was following failed
to maintain the proper speed to the runway and proceded to land short of
his designated "dot".
We were landing 27 and...

Avgas is cheap by
John Galban
I took a day off today to spend some quality time with my airplane.
On the way to the airport I stopped to fill up my truck with $2.05/gal
unleaded. I got to the airport and topped off the plane with
$2.06/gal 100LL. What's wrong with this picture? Kinda makes that
expensive autogas STC in my...

Radio waves vs light waves by
Jay Honeck
Okay, here's a weird one for the group: Radio waves are the same as light
waves, except they're not in the visible spectrum, right?
Here's why it matters: As we were departing from Muscatine, IA today (a
beautiful day to fly in the Midwest, BTW -- clear and warm) after a great
lunch, my gaze...

Help me clear up my brain fart by

"Never cross control!!!"
"Keep that ball centered!"
"Never use more than 20 degrees bank!"
"Too high on final - go around. Never slip unless its an emergency
landing."
These are things that were hammered in my head by my numerous CFIs
during pattern training as a student pilot. Now that I have my...

Aviation Fatalities: "he died doing something he loved..." by
Brad
I saw a similar sentiment posted in relation to Scott Crossfield's
fatel accident. I'm not sure I really get it...we're all going to die,
but do you really want to die doing something you love?
I see this often. Perhaps it's a way for grieving families to come to
term with their loss. But...

The Boeing Triple 7 by
Jay Honeck
....is simply an awesome aircraft.
With 9 rows across (2+5+2) in an aircraft as long as a 747 -- but with only
two gigantic engines -- modern materials, an excellent sound system, and
little video screens in the seat backs, I was absolutely astounded at the
comfort and ride of this plane.
I've...
