Why 28V DC? by Bob Martin
I'm working in the avionics integration test facility at Gulfstream... one of the engineers had a question for me (being an airplane person instead of an electrical/computer guy) that I couldn't answer... why do airplanes use 28V DC systems (or 14V)? He says most industrial applications use 24V...

The Osgood File is hitting us too by Jay Masino
It seems as though Charles Osgood has picked up on the anti-GA CBS news story and is broadcasting it on his "Osgood File" on the radio (he's also part of the CBS radio network). Here's the transcript from his site... http://www.theosgoodfile.com/osgood/thu3.htm --- Jay --

My email to CBS by Roger Long
I will be watching the "Eye on America" piece tonight about security at small airports. If the tone of the piece is remotely like the promotions I have seen, it will be the end of a decades long belief that CBS News is the best network source for fair and accurate reporting. It will also be the...

... Explosive Decompression.... by Big John
LawsomE Have see the results of aircraft hitting birds, 1 to 10 lbs, and taking out the cockpit canopy. Unless the carcass hit the pilot and caused major damage to him, all the aircraft I know of (over 55 years) have been flown back and landed ok. There are records of these events if you want to...

non-towered airport question by Snowbird
What's the general viewpoint here? A non-towered airport near us has two runways, shaped like an "L". Totally flat, no obstructions to vision-- airplane at the departure end for one can see airplanes at the other. Left traffic both, so the downwind for the short runway crosses the longer runway...

Target Landing Aid-VASI Type by Seth
I read about a VASI-type landing aid that sits on top of the cockpit panel or attached to the glare shield. It produces a "red dot" and allows the pilot to define his/her glide slope, etc. The product could be viewed at www.argenav.com. Has anyone had any experience/demonstration of this or a...

Career Change - Full-time CFI: Average Flight Hours per year? by Peter Gibbons
Background: I'm currently 30 years old with my IFR and about 190 hrs TT. Currently working as a systems administrator/programmer, but weighing my options are if I were to try to make a career out of aviation. Yeah - crazy, right? Try sitting in front of a monitor for 8 hours a day in a cubicle...

Strange wording in Commercial experience requirement by David Brooks
Joining together the disjointed bits of parpagraph, the ASEL Commercial night flying experience requirement is (pardon the long-windedness): a person who applies for a commercial pilot certificate with an airplane category and single-engine class rating must log at least 250 hours of flight time...

How do you get passengers over the fear of flying? by Gerald Sylvester
I recently got my PPL and find that most people are scared sh*tless to go up. One friend came along and was just blown away and had a ton of fun. Just about everyone else is "oh my god, I am so scared of airplanes." This weekend I was going to go with my CFI to celebrate my passing my checkride...

CBS News Piece by Philip Sondericker
Okay, I just watched the story that seems to have everyone up in arms, and I have to say, it was as ill-conceived and poorly thought out as many people feared. A couple of quick points: I actually found it somewhat humorous when the story mentioned the Florida kid who stole an airplane and crashed...
