Best way to identify fix? by Roy Smith
I was looking at some old IFR Refreshers tonight, and found the IFR Quiz from September 2002. See http://204.108.4.16/d-tpp/0503/00282I2C.PDF. Question #4 asks how to identify TANDS, and the answer they give is "BNA DME and Livingston's R-270". Isn't that kind of nuts? The DME arc is almost...

Flying to KFME (Tipton) by Dan Wegman
I'm planning to fly from Ohio to Tipton (KFME) from the west over the Martinsburg VOR (MRB). I've looked at the IAPs and the arrival & departure procedures for the DC area in order to get an idea of how the traffic flows. Although I'll file IFR, I've researched the ADIZ requirements too since...

Another Garmin Alert, Some Units Recalled by Dave Butler
The following from avweb.com: By Mary Grady Newswriter, Editor Garmin issued a service alert on Wednesday warning users of some of its brand-new GNS 430 and GNS 430A units not to use them for IFR operations. It was the company's second service alert this month to include those units....

VFR Climb gradient by Sparse
Does anyone know of a VFR climb gradient. The only possible thing I can come up with is what Part 25 says an aircraft must be able to meet concerning the takeoff path. From the start of takeoff to 1500 feet or when transition from takeoff to enroute configuration is complete. an aircraft must be...

Alternate minimuns and "TEMPO" in the forecast by Paul Tomblin
When you're determining if you need an alternate, and whether you can use an airport for an alternate, do you use the minimum of the normal forecast, TEMPOs and PROBs? -- Paul Tomblin http://xcski.com/blogs/pt/ Unix is great. The Unix culture is magnificent. Life in a Unix...

argh -- flight plan routes by [email protected]
ventmode I am an inexperienced instrument pilot and I just don't understand why we file routes on our flight plans at all! I never get what I filed, anyway, and it's not uncommon that the route I actually get shares not a single waypoint with what I filed. It is an interesting game to try to...

Compass turns revisited by Bob Gardner
Got a little memory jog in the April 2006 Designee Update...other than "Basic Instrument Flight Maneuvers," there is nothing in the 2004 (latest) PTS about timed turns OR compass turns. Nothing. Nada. So instrument pilot wannabes need not be concerned about demonstrating either one to the examiner....

Well Newps, The bids have come out for displaced Flight Service controllers to enter the terminal ATC environment. Looks like KBIL is one of the places they will be selecting into. I don't see a single ARTCC on the list, just ATC level 6,7 and 8 terminal facilities. Good luck... Chip, ZTL

ATC Altimeter Settings by O. Sami Saydjari
When entering an ATC region, we often get an altimeter setting, usually at some fix. So for example, when entering the Chicago center ATC region, they say something like, "Midway altimeter is xx.xx." I have some questions. 1. So, do they pick some fix for the region and give everyone...

Portable IMC emergency panel by Ron Garret
Howdy, I fly a Cirrus SR22, an all-electric plane. It has dual-redundant power busses, which makes total electrical failure unlikely, but if it does happen in IMC it can really ruin your day, so I'm thinking about a backup plan. Obviously a portable GPS and Comm unit are first on the priority...
