"Peter" wrote in message ... I apologise in advance as this is a topic done to death in the past, but I have heard various bits of info on this recently, some quoting FAA or NTSB rulings etc, and others disputing that...

FAA Control tower Abandoned by Blowinginthewind
Looks like this is becoming a common occurrence lately. Oh I forgot, the FAA treats their controller and technical workforce like ****. Maybe that's it. FAA Control tower Abandoned Southwest Planes Turn Around Minutes From Green Southwest Says Planes Could Not Land Without Air Traffic Control

LA Basin Preferred Routes? by Dane Spearing
In a couple of weeks, I'll be flying from SNA (Santa Ana/John Wayne, CA) up to the Bay Area (Palo Alto, CA), and was wondering if there is any way to plan or know in advance which departure SoCal is likely to give me. In looking at the SNA SIDs, a logical choice seems to be the Anaheim...

Flight planning software the accounts for winds ? by Mike Granby
FlightStar will do wind-aware routing and you can then look at the various atltitude options for time, cost and fuel burn. It's not 100% automatic, but it works great for my needs.

Printing off approach plates on demand? by [email protected]
Hello, I'm new to this IFR stuff and I'm wondering if I can subscribe to Jepp or some other service and print off approach plates and airport diagrams at my liesure? Ideally log into a web site every month, see if the plate changed, and if so, re-print it. Seems easy, so I imagine its...

Vector altitude for ILS below GS intercept altitude? by M
Is it common for the approach controller to vector for an ILS at an altitude below the GS intercept altitude on the IAP? Today is the third time in the last year or so that Victoria terminal vectored me for the ILS into BLI at 2000 feet, instead of 2100. I'm very familiar with the area and I did...

IFR use of handheld GPS by [email protected]
I've seen other discussions get off topic and go on about handheld GPS use under IFR. And people get all worked up about it. I know there is a lot of history on this newsgroup, but I haven't followed most of it (so don't lynch me, please). It seems that a lot of pilots believe a handheld GPS...

Why is ADF required for KSAC ILS Rwy 2 SIAP? by Mark Hansen
There's a NOTAM out for KSAC ILS-2 which states that the following note should be added to the planview: "ADF Required". Why is ADF required for this IAP? The marker beacon should tell you when you're over the LOM, and the missed approach procedure says you need to hold at the VOR or the NDB. Is...

MEA oddity near Harrisburg, PA? by Journeyman
I have the current Jepp LO 47 chart and there's something odd around the SEG (Sellinsgrove) VOR (just north of HAR). The MEAs around the VOR are in the 4000' range, except for V106 to RASHE, which is 14000'. I sent a note to Jepp querying this. They claim it's correct, based on navaid reception....

Does ELITE simulator have the Bendix KLN 94 GPS yet? by Mark Hansen
By googling, I've found that the ELITE flight simulator was working on a simulator for the Bendix/King KLN 94 GPS, but I can't find any additional information on this. Does anyone know if they've got this finished? Is it included in the current 8.0 version being sold? Thanks,

IFR GPS replace DME / ADF? by [email protected]
Hello, I'm new to IFR and just learning... if our plane doesn't have an ADF or a DME... can we legally use, say a garmin 430, to do a NDB approach? Also, can these garmin 430/480/530 units get you the DME? Also, are RNAVs still used often? Thanks,

Garmin 300XL GPS Approach didn't arm by Steve S
I was flying a practice approach today and loaded the approach (Full approach GPS 20 at RUQ, Rowan County, NC) into my Garmin 300XL. I flew the approach from initial fix to the final fix but the approach never armed and consequently never activated. The approach showed as active on the route page...

GPS approach step-down fixes by Julian Scarfe
As far as I can see, step-down fixes on GPS approaches are always defined by a distance to the threshold. Are there exceptions? Do GPS approaches exist with waypoints (forming part of the approach sequence) between the FAF and the runway threshold waypoint? Or is it guaranteed that after passing...

IAP without inbound course? by
Y'All, Received this email for which I have come to the group for an answer. Dear Gene, I was recently on an instrument checkride for the Military, and the instructor asked me a bonus question: "can you have a IAP with no published inbound course." I couldn't think of any scenarios, maybe you...

Why are some NDBs not displayed on Low Alt Enroute Charts? by Adlerson
Subject says it all. For instance, here in Southern California, the NDB Petis is on the low chart, while ElMonte is not. Anyone know why? Is it because of monitoring, or lack of? Or is it because one is part of the enroute structure, and the other one not? Or because one has approaches involving...
