ILS critical area when the tower is closed? by
Mark Hansen
In this month's AOPA Flight Training magazine, I read an article
which implied there was still some requirement to remain clear of
the ILS critical area even when the tower was closed.
I've been looking through the AIM, and can't find anything like
this. It does say that when the tower is open, it...

More IFR with VFR GPS questions by
Chris Quaintance
Hi Folks-
Without descending into the madness of the other thread, I have a
couple of questions regarding the use of a VFR GPS while IFR.
Hypothetically, let's say I was flying IFR from Santa Monica, CA to San
Jose, CA (SMO to RHV). The weather is CAVU. I am filed /A and cleared
via a fairly...

That's gotta be wrong by
Paul Tomblin
We had a local safety counsellor give us a seminar on GPS and he said
something that seems pretty ridiculous. I understand that when you're
using GPS, if you file an alternate, it has to have non-GPS approaches in
case GPS isn't working in the area or your own GPS unit is T/U. And he
wasn't...

Well, I flunked my medical, now what ? by
Scott Moore
Great, I flunked my medical.
Actually, this came close to happening 4 years ago. I tested bad on
blood sugar (I don't know if that means too high or too low). Last time,
I passed it after taking a new blood test after fasting. This time,
the (12 hour) fast didn't help. Last time, I got advised to...

No SID in clearance, fly it anyway? by
Roy Smith
Had a strange thing happen to me today. I filed IFR HPN - HFD (White
Plains NY to Hartford CT). The route part of my clearance came back
"radar vectors Carmel, V1, Hartford, Direct".
Usually out of HPN I would expect to get the Westchester-1 departure,
but it wasn't in my clearance, and I when...

The need for original documents, N-reg aircraft? by
Dave Butler
Peter wrote:

Can anyone point to a reference for this? I can't find it in the 2005
FAR/AIM.
In the US there is no...

Wow, that took forever it seemed like to show up in the database! I am
getting ready to go do my Multi Engine & Single Engine Sea, I decided to put
on hold the CFI after looking at Insurance Costs. Wow! It makes me wonder
how many CFI's out there don't have Insurance becuse of the costs.

PASSED IFR checkride today. by
STICKMONKE
I have quietly read this newsgroup for the past year. It has been very
helpful. During that time I was studying for my IFR rating. We'll today I
passed it on my first attempt. What a relief!

Avmap 4 GPS - anyone knows anything about it??? by
Jay Honeck
I've finally located the manuals at
http://www.pilotmall.com/page/1/PROD/26/17390
Mary and I own (and LOVE) the AvMap EKP-IIIC, the predecessor to the EKP-IV.
We played with the IV extensively at OSH this year, and I fell in love with
it. It's smaller, thinner -- yet still has a BIGGER,...

What a flight I experienced yesterday! Got to do more things I never did
which made for such a wonderful learning experiences and also raised
questions in my mind (surprise, surprise!).
Really worked over my decision on to launch or not to launch today to fly
from 2G2 (Steubenville, OH) to BWG...

Lake effect snow by
Paul Tomblin
Any more experienced Great Lakes area pilots able to answer some questions
about lake effect snow?
1. When there are bands of lake effect snow across your path:
- how high up do they go?
- how much ice do they produce?
2. What about if the band is covering the airport? Fly the approach...

Lowest Cost GPS IFR system? by
tom pettit
I'm currently flying VFR in a vfr equipped plane. What would be the lowest
cost GPS based instrument system I could install and be legal for IFR
flying?
I looked through the last six months of this newsgroup, but didn't see a FAQ
or the answer to the above, so I hope it won't be something that...

Departing IFR at SMO w/ Tower Closed by
Dan
Ok, here is a hypothetical question about departing from Santa Monica
and about IFR departures at uncontrolled fields in general. Suppose it
is after 9pm (the tower is closed) but before 11pm (departures still
permitted). Assuming that the field is IFR, what would be the proper
way to obtain...
