US: TSA Alien Flight Training Update by
Judy Ruprecht
A new TSA interpretation of the 'flight training' requiring
security checks, photo identification et al is the
subject of TSA Document 337, dated January 5, 2005.
The new interpretation is addressed in some detail
at the AOPA website, without mention of the glider
exemption issued October 29,...

DAFIF database to be removed from public domain by
André Somers
Hi all,
It has come to my attention that the National Geospacial-Intelligence Agency
(NGA) is considdering to stop distributing the DAFIF database to the
public. A lot of soaring-related software relies on this source of
information for their airspace data. In the proposal, there is a call
to...

Cockpit Placards by
Brian Iten
Does anyone have a source for making or know where
I can find the placards that are stuck on the frame
rails of the cockpit for a Discus? I have emailed M&H
a couple of times but haven't heard from them. Maybe
they are escaping the winter to a warm location.......
Thanks for the help

SSA Membership by
Bill Staley
I read on the website that last year the SSA folks in Hobbs hand
stuffed 10,000 mailers that were sent to potential members. And, that
the results were less that satisfactory to them. This seems to me to
me a very significant effort by a very small number of already
overworked people.
We all...

Panel volt meter by
Bob C
I just found a really nice panel volt meter. It is
7/8' X 1-3/4' X 1/8'. Weighs nothing. It needs a
single 7/32' hole for mounting. The wires run through
the single hollow mounting stud to the rear of the
panel. Really slick! 2 wires (+V & ground). Reads
4V to 25V. It's from Lascar...

Polar Analysis from flight logs? by
Mark Zivley
We all know what the manufacturer's polars look like, but what about our
individual planes. Has anyone done any work to develop a program that
would look at some flight logs and determine what a particular glider's
actual polar is? At one point Ball was making a vario system that would
determine...

GPS_LOG WinCE at SSA convention by
Henryk Birecki
On Saturday Feb 12 2005 there is a planned "software shootout" at the
SSA convention. The idea is to give about 10 minutes slide
presentation per program and answer some questions. At the moment I am
not planning to attend, but if a (experienced) GPS_LOG WinCE user is
going there anyway and would...

Sad news. A glider crashed in the Omarama saddle area
and the pilot was killed.

No witnesses, although the nearby contest was tasked through the area.
A contest pilot found the wreckage and called a mayday. That's the
