VOR ranges on sectionals by Mxsmanic
I was pretty sure that there was something on sectional charts that allows you to determine the service range of a given VOR, but looking at the guide to aeronautical charts I don't see anything that indicates VOR range in the legend. Am I missing something or am I just not remembering things...

Airport and Airport 1975 by Dave J
Okay, in a fit of aviation desperation, I decided to watch these two films back to back as a way to get my regular fix without running the Hobbs. The movies are interesting. They're this strange mix of preposterous and kinda 1/2 decent from an aviation persepective, especially the first one. They...

I *finally* scored a fix by Andrew Gideon
I confess: It's been since December since I've last been up. I did try one time since, but my headset broke. And I didn't think it would be this long until my next attempt. But work, kids, weather...all conspired to keep me ground-bound...until today. I'm out of every currency possible; even...

IFR Flight Twice as Deadly as VFR? by Jay Honeck
In the current issue of "Flying" magazine Richard Collins states that flying on instruments is approximately twice as dangerous as flying VFR. Twice as many deaths occur while flying under instrument flight rules as they do in visual flight rules, per hour flown. This statistic seems stunningly...

Why so many abbreviations in NOTAMs, etc.? by Mxsmanic
Why are so many things abbreviated in NOTAMs and other similar documents? Even words that aren't very long to begin with are often abbreviated, saving only a letter or two. I can't think of any situation today in which bandwidth would be so severely limited that saving a letter or two would make...

Mom's Airline by john smith[_2_]
Today was another flight by Mom's Airline. The plans were laid two-weeks ago a the annual family Easter gathering. The return trip from Ohio to Alabama with my sister's family lasted an extra week this year due to the low pressure system that crossed the northern Unites states last weekend. So,...

Knowing when you are overflying something by Mxsmanic
How do you know when you are exactly overflying a specific spot on the ground? It's it just a matter of knowing your particular aircraft, or are there tricks that can help to determine this? I know you can look off the tip of your wing to see if you're abeam something (such as a runway), but how...

About avoiding airspace and cruising by Erik
Not the sicko kind of cruising, either. A friend of mine bought a house on some large property about six miles (linearly) away from a towered airport with class D five miles around it (one protrusion for approaches that I'm not concerned with). She's having a barn built and I'd like to fly over...

FAA Administrator Marian Blakey was supposed to appear at Sun N Fun today at 1PM. Unfortunately, she "had a prior commitment" (made last night?). Instead, she sent a panel of managers to address us. When I was going through the gate to the flight line, I noticed two people coming the other...
