flying competition in mountains by Brad[_2_]
Not being a competition pilot myself I am not in the know regarding this subject. But.......are there any soaring competitions held in the U.S. where flying in the mountains is common for the whole course? I've been told that pilots prefer the "safety" of desert or basin flying since there are...

Australian contest movie by Don[_4_]
Does anyone remember a soaring documentary movie that came out in the 80s or early 90s that featured a soaring contest in Australia and followed Ingo Renner among others? It might have been called "Zulu Romeo" or something? Anyway, it was very well done, using helicopters to film gliders in...

Region 10 Report from Brenham by Bob D
2 racing days in the bag. Day 2 (today) was referred to by one seasoned competitor as "very Uvaldesqe." In other words: 3:00PM thermals going to 7,500-7,800agl at 9-plus knots. Tons of CU's, 250- miles, 74mph for the standards WITHOUT water. We will hope this great weather continues because for...

Cross Country Sailplanes: In the Flatland by Chris Prince
I'm not a frequent reader of rec.aviation.soaring, so at the risk of asking a common question, I'll pose my question. I fly cross country here in the meaty middle (cheesy middle? ;)) part of the US-- mostly Wisconsin, often Minnesota, sometimes Iowa, Illinois, South Dakota, Michigan. I often land...

Advice for / stories about Commercial practical test? by Roger Worden[_2_]
If all goes well, I'll be taking my practical test for the Commercial certificate in just a few weeks. Any Commercial glider pilots have any words of wisdom for the test? Anything that your examiner had you do that was a surprise or harder than you expected? Any relevant (or irrelevant but...

(USA only) Managing 911 response to off field landings by Jim Beckman[_2_]
A few years back I went on a retrieve for a glider competing in a 1-26 contest at Blairstown. The pilot set it down nicely in a field, contacted the owner and he was cool about the whole thing. But somebody must have dropped a dime, and a couple of young NJ State Police troopers showed up. These...

PIK 20 and 3000 hrs limit by poul g
The company originally responsible for PIK 20 no longer exists. I've heard, that no procedure to extend the 3.000 hrs limit has been established, and that consequently ships after this limit can only operate as experimental. Can someone confirm og correct me? Yours, /Poul Guldbaek

Varicalc Audiovario Problem by jsbrake
I've sent this to the guy who designed and built my Varicalc 2 vario, but thought that posting here my get a fast response. The Varicalc 2 was built in 1990-ish and has audio, Speed-to-fly and Final Glide. Two weeks ago (last time I flew my ship), the audio was working fine... well, except that...

Tinted canopies desirable? by Itsaplane[_2_]
I've wondered about the desirability of having a tinted canopy. Even with the heat of flying in the desert, I'm concerned that if you made the mistake of landing after sunset, near dark, you might wish your canopy wasn't tinted... Comments? Eric ER

LS-6 and rudder size by Brad[_2_]
I've been looking at the LS-6 gliders lately and noticed that on the LS-6C the rudder looks almost twice as big at the root chord than on the LS-6A. Is this an optical illusion, or is it real? I am guessing that since the later version of the LS-6 had tip extensions, the rudder was resized to...

XCSoar in the UK by Martin Gregorie[_5_]
Just a quick heads-up: I've added a page to my website dealing with XCSoar from the UK perspective. Its prime purpose is to make it easier to get data files for use in the UK, which include a topo&terrain map I made initially for my own use and a (very) skeletal airfields file which you can...
