ILS or LOC approach? by
Dan Wegman
I just noticed an approach to Frederick, MD (FDK) entitled "ILS OR LOC RWY
23". I thought every ILS could be flown as a non-precision LOC approach so
why not just call this one the "ILS RWY 23"?

Need a 2nd nav with GNS 430? by
Paul Folbrecht
I am doing some preliminary planning of the panel for my RV-9A and
wondering if a 2nd nav is really a necessity with a GNS 430 in the
panel. Seems to me that flying IFR GPS, with mostly GPS approaches in
the near future, I should not have much need for a 2nd VOR receiver to
identify intersections...

Vectors over water by
paul kgyy
Flying IFR in/around the Chicago Class B, it's not unusual to get
vectored out over Lake Michigan. I've always been a little nervous
about this but even more so after the recent PA28 downing off
Milwaukee. Flotation gear is no solution for probably 6 months of the
year because of water...

PIREP: Potomac TRACON Tour by
Charlie Derk
All -
Just wanted to post my experiences from a tour that I took today of the
Potomac TRACON in Warrenton, VA.
First off, I got my instrument rating back in January, and today was the
first time I flew a ton of hard IFR. It was a 2.3 hour trip from KABE to
KHEF. I went IMC at 1000' MSL and...

DFAFIF airport data problems? by
Mitty
I recently got a tablet PC, HP TC1100, and a little bluetooth GPS receiver to go
with it. Rode in the back seat of an Arrow this afternoon and played for a
couple of hours with the APIC software. Lots of warts on APIC, one of which was
missing airports. I'm in the Minneapolis area and just west...

Rolling a Non Aerobat 150 by
Jose
I have to ask why you feel it's
reasonable to turn this guy in to the FSDO but not to copy license
plate numbers of speeders and turn them in.
I didn't make the post, but I do have some reasons.
Way back when... when I was learning to fly and learning how the regs
worked, it was made clear...

Video of VOR A approach into MBO in actual by
A Lieberman
I took a friend up (VFR pilot) to give him a taste of what instrument
flying was about. We did two ILS's over at JAN (Jackson MS) and then a VOR
Alpha back to MBO (Madison MS).
I briefed him that it may be a possibility we may not be able to return to
MBO as ceilings on departure were 700 feet. ...

Total electrical failure - (hypothetical) by
paul kgyy
I was doing some practice IFR at home last night with my simulator, and
set up for random failures. First thing that happened was complete
electrical shut down - no radios, no VOR, no Xponder, and it suddenly
occurred to me that I'd never thought through what I would do. I do
carry backup comm...

Eastern PA (KABE) to Manassas VA (KHEF) by
Charlie Derk
Hey all -
Planning on going down to Manassas on Saturday for a tour of the new
Potomac TRACON. Has anyone flown from Eastern PA/Northern NJ/NY area
down to KHEF?
I'm trying to determine what to expect as far as an IFR clearance. I'm
trying to do some planning so I can figure out how long its...

AUG VOR/DME 8 by
Gary Drescher
The AUG VOR/DME 8 profile shows a fix at AUG 1.9, just before the MAP at AUG
0.5. But there no separate altitude designations are shown for the segment
just before or just after AUG 1.9. The profile shows a transition from a
diagonally-downward flight path to a horizontal flight path at AUG 1.9....

New school in Seattle area by
Baha
I just wanted to inform Seattle area pilots about a new school that
started in Renton Municipal Airport. We are AcuWings, a family owned
business. The reason we started the school is because we felt the void
in Renton Airport for an alternative outfit.
We currently have a Piper Tomahawk that is a...

AnywhereWx vs. AirGator NavAirWx by
Jonathan Goodish
Thanks to all who replied to my in-flight weather questions.
I think that I've narrowed my selection down to a PDA solution using the
iPaq 4700, along with packages for XM weather an moving map from either
Control Vision (AnywhereWx) or AirGator (NavAirWx).
Detailed information on the web sites...

Garmin GMA 340 Music Input by
O. Sami Saydjari
I have a Garmin 340 panel and the installer put a music input jack for
it. So, I tried plugging my portable MP3 player output into the music
jack. At maximum volume on the MP3 player, the music was almost
completely inaudible. Does the signal need to be pre amplified in some
way, or did the...

Have we stopped teaching VOR skills? by
Roy Smith
I flew with somebody recently who just got their instrument rating a few
months ago, in a GPS-equipped airplane. His GPS and BAI skills were fine,
but when I suggested we fly one leg without the GPS, just using VORs and a
chart for en-route navigation, he said he had never done that in...
