Vertical Card Compass Mystery by
Rosspilot
A strange thing has happened that I cannot explain. I wonder what the
readership thinks . . .
I have a Precision vertical card compass. I fly at least 3 times a week, and I
know my airplane real well. Last week, when I looked at my compass, the little
airplane
that should point up was about 30...

Silver State Helicopters ... by
Jon Kraus
We just purchased a'79 M20J 4443H. I am in the middle of getting my 10
hours with a CFI for Insurance purposes and I have to tell you that this
thing is a lot different to land than a Skyhawk. So far I am glad that
my CFI has been with me because 75 percent of the landings have not been
pretty....

Story from an older pilot 74 by
Hankal
Took off Saturday morning at 6:30 still very dark. Got my IFR clearance in the
air and soon was in solid IMC. Some clouds were nasty black. Got course
deviation don't like to bounce my plane around. 2 hours into the flight the
clouds were not as nasty. 30 minutes later I landed at SGJ for fuel....

Flying into Chass B by
PaulaJay1
Do I feel DUMB!
Flying west at 4500 ft I was "fat, dumb and happy" when I noticed I was in a
4000/10000 ft Class B vail. DIVE to get to 2500. I was not on the radio and
chose not to call approach.
I've filed the NASA form. By the way, what does that get me?
Now, I guess, I just wait to see if...

FAA violations and accidents by
Doug
I know of two accidents. In neither accident was anyone injured but in
both the plane was substantially damaged or totalled. The FAA sighted
the owner operator in both cases for violations involving the aircraft
logging. In one case they did not like the wording of the last annual
and in the other...

Owning before obtaining a PP license by
New Pilot
Hello all,
Wanted to hear your advice about buying a brand-new plane even before
getting the PPL ticket.
Here is my situation: I am a businessman sitting on quite a bit of cash
being generated by my business, and I am also a student pilot, will probably
get my ticket by the next Summer. I am...

tony roberts
A friend of mine who is an experienced commercial and airshow pilot, but
who is not too internet savvy asked me a question today which I couldn't
answer - but I am hoping that someone here can.
He is currently looking to sell a brand new custom built aircaft which
was built with one specific goal...

O300D Aluminum in Oil by
Gary Wilcox
Well had my 1st oil change today. Have owned the 1964 172E for just 25
hours. When the filter was cut open we found a few small slivers of
Aluminum.
When I bought the plane the pre-buy inspection was a complete annual and the
mechanic didn't mention any "aluminum in the oil" so apparrantly this...

Ping C-172XP owners by
Jack Allison
Any C-172XP owners out there? I have a potential partner and the 172XP
is a plane that would fit nicely into a first time ownership scenario
for both of us. Looking for any advice, the good, the bad, the ugly
the XP model. TIA!

Pocket PC GPS software. by
R.T.
Hello all. Just wondering if anyone is using a Pocket PC with GPS and what
software they are using. I already have a Garmin 196 but I also have a
Pocket PC with GPS and thought it would make a good backup.
Thanks in advance.

Garmin 430 Reception by
Jon Kraus
Our "new" '79 M20J came with a 2 year old Garmin 430 GPS and Garmin 340
audio panel. The backup radio is an ancient King 170B. I must say that
the reception on the Garmin sucks compared to the 170B. Am I doing
something wrong or is this just something I have to live with? To me for
10 grand the...

Metal fatigue in Lycoming engines limiting its TBO? by
Wolfgang
Is anyone aware of statistical or other data that would indicate what
percentage of engines make it well beyond the factory specified TBO,
and how much longer they can be flown safely? I worry about sudden
engine failure due to metal fatigue.
Many of the small Lyc. engines have a TBO of around...

Batteries, charger for Yaesu handheld - NiCad or NiMH? by
David Herman
Who knows about batteries here?
I have a Yaesu (now Vertex Standard) Aviator Pro II VX-120 handheld radio.
It's a good, basic unit that has worked flawlessly, it'ss relatively cheap
and is all the technology I need for this. My question is about batteries
and chargers for it.
When I bought the...

My Aztec insurance went up just a bit. by
Kyler Laird
Andy Facer just called and gave me the new quote from AIG.
I'm back where I was a couple years ago.
2001-2002 $2,725
2002-2003 $2,717
2003-2004 $2,629
2004-2005 $2,723
I don't consider this to be a significant change.

C-182 Seats by
R.T.
Good day all,
I have a 67 C-182. Since I purchased the plane this summer the pilots seat
seemed to recline to far back. After some investigation it appeared as
though someone had replaced the Pawls that lock the seat in position with
the incorrect ones. The ones installed were from a 172 so I...

dirty bird by
The Weiss Family
A question for those of you who tie down:
I flew just a couple days ago, then went out to the airport today. I was
APALLED at how dirty my plane got!
We had a little rain, and there's been frost in the morning, but I still
couldn't believe how dirty she was.
Does anyone have a good method for...
