ENGINE BASICS by Veeduber[_2_]
To All: Recent posts about the Pobjoy radial engine have generated a number of private messages which indicate some subscribers to this Newsgroup lack a basic understanding in how the Internal Combustion engine actually works. For example ALL engines have some degree of overlap in their cam...

The Home-made Home-builders Engine by Veeduber[_2_]
To All: For those of us who own a lathe and milling machine, somewhere in our past there is probably a tiny steam engine. Indeed, there's probably more than than one. A company in England provides the basic castings as a kit. As the machinist, you are expected to provide all else, from the...

Aviation Sheetmetal Work by [email protected]
To All: Guy calls, wants to buy my metal brake & sheet metal tools. Left unsaid is WHY someone you don't even know would call you up out of the blue and want to buy some tools which, in a couple of cases belonged to my grandfather, my dad, and my brother. The WHY? Because I've been diagnosed with...

How Beat The High Cost Of Fuel: The ElectraFlyer-C by Larry Dighera
How Beat The High Cost Of Fuel Randall Fishman, president of Electric Aircraft Corp., flew his ultralight trike at EAA Airventure 2007, Oshkosh. "I flew the trike in front of the crowds, and the trike was mobbed with people every day. The EAA folks really loved the idea." The ElectraFlyer won...

More LED's - Again by [email protected]
To All: The steady decline in the cost of ultra-bright green LED's (now about two-bits each for a 100-piece baggie) has generated renewed interest in the bug-eyed LED nav lights I described on this Newsgroup a couple of years ago. Unfortunately, that renewed interest has lead to some renewed...

Why no plywood monocoque homebuilts? by [email protected]
Howdy, After reading a bit about the early Lockheed Vega, the Focker Albatross DIII and the Dehavilland Mosquito I was a bit suprised that plywood monocoque construction hasn't been used in any more modern airplanes. (Or at least none that I can think of) What gives? Is it cheaper to use glass...

Need Info On Reamers by DonMorrisey
I'm trying to figure out how and where to buy reamers. I need to create some 5/8" and 1/2" holes in ultra high molecular weight polyethylene blocks for my control system. The aileron push tubes slide thorugh the blocks and the aileron actuators mount in the blocks as well. The mounting component...

Harmon Rocket II questions by Jason Grass
Does anyone here know much about the Harmon Rocket II? I've been looking at it, and it concerns me in the fact that the cockpit demensions look a little snug. It has enough room in width, but the distance between the front and back seat seems too close, as does the distance of the instrument panel...

Fuel dump switch in homebuilt by Jay
After reading some of the transcripts from the "Last Words" website, where the flight engineers were dumping fuel when it became evident that an emergecy landing was a certainty, it dawned on me that there might be some benefit for a small plane as well. The less energy you carry into a crash...

Learning to weld with a non-aircraft project by Ed
Eventually I plan to build a tube-n-fabric aircraft, but now isn't the time. However, I would like to start developing the skills that I will need. I've been looking at kids playsets for our yard. Most of them are made from redwood, and are quite expensive. Several thousand dollars for the...

Homebuilding Killed John Denver by never_moore352
I just read in the newspaper that John Denver was killed in a homebuilt airplane? That got me thinking to look for a NG that might be dedicated to this activity, and I found this one. This is all new to me, quite honestly, and disturbing. People are building airplanes at home and then flying...

Stuka in Maine by Steve Foley
I was at the Internation Sea-Plane Fly-in last weekend in Greenville, Maine, and saw what looked like a Stuka flying over the town and down the lake. I got some blury pictures, so I know I didn't dream it. Anyone know anything about this plane? I'd love to see it up close. It wasn't at the airport...

Engine exceeds TBO by Michael Horowitz
I have a lead on a Tcraft with an A-65 engine that has exceeded recommended TBO. It is my understanding the compression is still good. How should I approach this engine ( i.e. just assume everything over 1800 hours was a freebee and there is no guarantee it's not about to poop out)? - Mike
