Turbulators and DG-101 by
John DeRosa Sky Soaring Chicago IL
I just bought a DG-101 and was trying to figure out if turbulator tape
would help the performance.
I sent that question to the general DG factory email account
) and got a nice reply from Wilhelm Dirks (Chief
Designer!).
His response was succinct; "Turbulators won't make...

British Pathe glider film clips... by
Marc Ramsey
A posting on the Ultralight Soaring list passed on a pointer to a page
full of gliding film clips from the 30s through 50s:
http://web.ukonline.co.uk/sssrcsoaring/Video/Pathe.html
There are two clips from California in the 30s, both appear to be at the
same site. Does anyone recognize the...

RS-1 ZANONIA by
JJ Sinclair
The Zanonia was a beautiful little gull-wing, 14 meter, stick & fabric,
sailplane that John Robinson flew in winning the US Championships in '40, '41
and '46. John Robinson was awarded the Worlds FIRST Diamond badge for flights
made in his Zanonia.
I am building a replica of this historic...

Landout Laws by
Charles Petersen
We had two landouts at Seminole yesterday, both in the same field, - a
pasture with cattle and a locked gate. One of the pilots visited a nearby
farmhouse, and spoke with the wife of the property owner asking permission
to enter and a key. She was very nice and called her son. He agreed to
call...

Good Lift at Marfa February 22 by
Snead1
Today, Sunday February 22, soaring conditions were very good in Marfa Texas.
Cloud base was about 13,500. Thermals varied in strength, but I make a few
turns at over 7 knots. Wind was about 15 mph out of the south. I did not find
any wave.

Zen and the Art of Landouts by

When a combat pilot
Why oh why do "the" Americans (apologies to those who don't) have such
high esteem for fighter pilots, killing and war? Isn't soaring about
peace and understanding nature? And how dare you to change the subject
line to "Zen" when you...

World Records by
Nick Gilbert
Can anyone think of a reason why there are separate mens & womens world
records? The ease of 'relief' is the only disadvantage I can think of for
women.
I'm not saying that I think there shouldn't be!
Nick.

Registered BLIP-MAP users, fill out survey by
Stewart Kissel
I received it and filled it out, some changes which
will no doubt get discussed here in the works. Give
yourself a few minutes to fill it out, it is an indepth
survey.
And for what it's worth, I would like to see SSA sponsor
this product.

Transponders and Radios - USA by
Ray Lovinggood
While I would like to have a transponder installed,
I don't have two necessary items:
1. Money
2. Panel Space
My panel isn't overly large and doesn't have room for
a B-50 (two holes) AND room for a 'back-up' variometer.
So, when I 'splurge' for another instrument, it will
be for a B-50 and not a...

More on transponder petition by
Ian Cant
I apologize for my loose terminology in last message. Gliders are exempted within the FAR section 215 from transponder requirements, not by a separate 'exemption letter'. And I was not clear about why I distinguished the 'all airspace above 10,000 ft' from the 'more than 40 / 20 miles'...

Air Tour Safety Standards NPRM by
Vaughn
The FAA is now conducting a "public meeting" via Internet on the sightseeing
NPRM. I have not seen any comments there (other than my own) from glider
people. I really suggest that you take another look at that NPRM, read the
comments, read the responses from the FAA, and say your piece.

LINUX flight software by

Apparently, there are a few people out there working with Linux for gliding
applications. (Thanks for the links) Maybe it's a good thing.
I keep thinking that the potential user base in this space is so small that
if the PDA based apps split it, there won't be all that much profit to
support a...

Porsche Trade for Sailplane??? by

I'm considering the purchase of a glider this year and also need to make some
space in my garage, thus the desire to trade (plus/minus cash) my 1991 Carerra

for the right deal would consider one of the following (in order...
