Plug fouled by Denny
Well, having to do a bunch of cross country flying moving grandchildren around, 20 hours over two weeks, means I had to put in 100LL at whatever backwater airport I happened to be at, instead of the cheap nasty mogas I usually burn... Of course, starting up on a remote airstrip mean't finding a...

Piper Archer - Headphones drains the battery ? by Roy Page
When we bought our Piper Archer 2 years ago the previous owner cautioned about leaving headphones plugged in in the rear seats. He reckoned that with the headphones plugged in the battery would be slowly drained. I dismissed this caution as it did not seem to make any sense from an electrical point...

Last Plane Without a Computer by Charles Talleyrand
I'm going to guess the last successful airliner without a computer was the Boeing 737 original version. And the largest sucessful airliner without a computer was the Boeing 747 original. And I believe the last successful large bomber without a computer was the B-47. Can anyone confirm or refute...

Leak proof tubes by Roger
A while back...Last Summer there was a theread about the new leak proof innertubes for aircraft tires. (I've forgottten the name), but at any rate I wanted to add that I've had them on the mains since last spring and still haven't had to pump them up except once about a month after the instalation...

AOPA flight planner chuckle by [email protected]
My flying club is undergoing a fleet restructure, replacing Warriors with Skyhawks. I was editing my profile on AOPA flight planner, deleting the old aircraft. When I highlight a plane and "delete" in the aircraft list, the dialog that pops up asks: The aircraft "Piper - PA28-161 - N81917" will...

Learning piston engine basics by [email protected]
Is there a good place on the web that describes the basics and terminology of piston engines? I understand the basic concepts, but some of the terms I read, like journals and bosses, etc., are a bit beyond me and I'd like to get a little bit better knowledge of the concepts. I'm definitely not...

Removing original equipment by Robert M. Gary
Is there any reason I can't remove my factory OAT and throw it out? I have a mechanical OAT gauge but would rather just use my EDM OAT gauge. The JPI says their gauge is only certified as "supplemental" but does the FAA even care if I have an OAT at all? I've been replacing the original OAT gauge...

Anyone know of this airplane? by soon to be student
This may sound like a silly question but: Some time ago my father passed away suddenly when I was a teenager and my mother sold his airplane. I don't know much about the transaction only that my fathers C182 left Canada and headed down to the States. Fast Forward 22 years and I happen to find a ...

Radio Static When Engine Runs by ECB
Fellow Flying Dudes, I own a '63 Piper Cherokee with King KX 155s ... the radios both run fine .... until I fire up the engine. There is a lot of popping and static that changes a bit with adjustments in engine speed. I have turned off all other equipment to omit other causes. I have shut...

Aircraft Tugs by [email protected]
I recently became a first time aircraft owner and I'm quickly realizing that with the uneven pavement on the ramp to my hanger, and the 2600lb empty weight of the plane, I'm going to have to resign to getting some form of aircraft tug. Looking at the Sporty's catalog, there are two types listed,...

Mark 12D Issues (Troubleshooting Update) by three-eight-hotel
I had posted an issue I was having, regarding my Narco radios, back before Osh and got some valuable feedback: http://groups.google.com/group/rec.aviation.owning/browse_frm/thread/67fb608ffde2515a/3209e45844bccf31?q=three-eight-hotel&rnum=1#3209e45844bccf31 What I was lacking was some decent...

avionics manuals by cpw
Hi all. I'm about to become a 1/2 partner in a Cessna 182 and would like to purchase hard copies of manuals for the on board avionics. I've downloaded the files from Bendix/King and Garmin, but would like to purchase hard copy manuals for the Garmin MX 20, and B/K KAP 140, and KLN 94. Any...

AD Database ? by Mike
I am somewhat new to flying and considering buying an airplane. But with all the ADs/SBs/etc. out for all kinds of airplanes, I was wondering if there is somewhere online I could go plug in the type of airplane - C182, and serial number - 18281234 and get a list of all outstanding ADs/SBs/etc that...

Whelen lights by [email protected]
I was just curious about ya'lls experience with Whelen lights on your aircraft. The reason I'm asking is that I work at the USA's largest firetruck manufacturer and I deal with Whelen lights daily. My experience with Whelen lights on firetrucks is that while they tend to be technologically...

GEM-610 data download info needed by [email protected]
Hi all, I just installed a GEM-610 in my airplane and it works great. Is there a way to download/configure the unit without the suggested HP 200LX handheld computer? I've tried a Toshiba laptop with no luck. Any suggestions? Thanks

Wrong data in Jepp GPS database? by Roy Smith
I had a strange experience with our CNX-80 earlier today. Heading back into HPN, we tried to bring up the approach frequency 126.4, and discovered it wasn't in the database. There were the normal secondary freqs (120.8 and 124.65), but no 126.4. Then I looked up DXR (Danbury, right next...
