(Hijacked) Bang for the Buck by Steve Hill
Derek C. wrote "In my experience, owning a higher performance glider just means that you land out further away" This is the exact reason I enjoy the self launching sailplane so much. Lots of people thinks it's because you can go whenever you want, which holds some truth, but in fact, we all want...

Winch Launch Stresses on Vintage Gliders by Mike Schumann
Our club is exploring switching from aero tow to winch launching. Some of our members own older wooden gliders and have expressed concerns about the increased stress on the glider's structure resulting from winch launching vs. aero tow. Is this a valid concern? -- Mike Schumann

(Hijacked) Bang for the Buck by Derek Copeland
In my experience, owning a higher performance glider just means that you land out further away! Admittedly I fly in damp little Britain, so the further you go, the more likely you are to encounter a poor airmass. Derek C -------------------------------- At 19:18 30 January 2006, Bob Whelan...

Zaino by [email protected]
Having just washed and waxed the car with Zaino, I am wondering if anyone has used it on their sailplane. The Zaino web site states that it is OK for fiberglass and gel coat. Any one used it? What results/problems? ASW27BV

U2 (U.S.!) Forwardment by Bob Whelan
The following write-up/e-mail came to me from a fellow soaring club member, and is verbatim below the dashed line. I've no idea of its provenance, either, but to me it has the ring of truth about it, and it may be of interest to fellow glider pilots. Regards, Bob W. - - - - - -

Sky Sailing in Early March? by Jeremy Zawodny
I need to be in the San Diego area for a conference in early March and am contemplating taking a few extra days off and driving down there (from the SF Bay Area) with my glider rather than flying. I've done this before, going to Pasadena and flying two days at Great Western Soaring...

Post-assembly or Pre-launch checks by AZ T-rex
Today I got a reminder of how important it is to perform a positive control check after each assembly. My sailplane, a Grob102 just returned from a maintenance facility. After assembly, I pushed over to the line with the help of one of my fellow co-owners. I asked for his assistance in performing...

When discussing purchase costs of gliders....I have decided to compare them to SUV's. You can buy a perfectly fine used glider for $30-$40k....or you can go into six digits for something a little better at the margin. And try and sell a 10 year old Escalade for what you paid for it.

In the same time plumbers carpenters and the like will charge you a month of your salary for a day of their work and will ensure you wait their appearance at least two or three months. Then go pound nails for a living if you think they are overpaid.

Here is a quote from the DG/LS web site...it is, in my humble opinion, worrisome statement : Economic aspects Everyone knows that the approved certification of new models becomes more and more expensive and the number of production planes will never reach the quantities of the past. The cost for...

A new threat to Nevada soaring by bumper
According to the "Nevada Appeal", Hill Air Force Base in Utah is seeking approval from the FAA to add a 2,400 square-mile training zone for F-16 jets over White Pine and Elko counties in eastern Nevada. The military already has control over an estimated half of Nevada air-space, a lot compared...

DG-300 instrument panel by [email protected]
I'm thinking of starting anew with the instrument panel in the 300. The Terra 720 radio is out, and the L-NAV works, but it came with an old Garmin 95 GPS, which looks more like a typewriter, and no logger. I'm looking to do a Cambridge 302, with a good radio, and remove the compass from atop the...
