Few Observations by
[email protected]
That was a good post answering Horowitz. I have just done a lot of
painting and agree that orange peel is because of paint not flowing out
for lack of solvent. You have to find a balance --- too much solvent
and you get runs; too little solvent and you get orange peel. When you
get it just...

FG gas tanks. by
in limbo
I have seen FG gas tanks. What and how are these made? Does one
neeed to line the insides for it to be gas compatible? What about the
fittings and the cap and vent set up? Does anyone have a pictured and
or detailed build up?

Fiber alignment and twist. by
[email protected]
Howdy,
If I have a long recatangular box like a spar, and want to reduce
twisting in the long axis, is it better to lay out the fiberglass mat
with the fibers aligned at a 45 to the length, or parallel to the
length?
For the sake of argument, presume that all I'm concerned about is
twist.

Fiber optic guide for nav lights by
[email protected]
I was wondering if anyone has considered using a lightpipe or
fiberoptic bundle for nav lights. I am considering it for the rear nav
light (white) on my Europa. Is it feasible? Anyone know where I can buy
these lightpipes?

fiberfrax..which way is up? by
[email protected]
I'm getting ready to lay down fiberfrax in the cowling. One side is
smooth...the other has a "pebble" type texture. Which side should
face the engine...ie. which side would deal with fire the best?

Fiberglass / Mold release advice requested by
Mark Zivley
Note: remove the second "hot" in my "reply to" to email directly
I'm working on a project to fabricate a fairing to cover a small
protrusion. I've made a mold (external) that I now want to cover with a
mold release agent and then put fiberglass on top of. Ideally I'd like
to be able to remove...

Fiberglass adhesion to aluminum? by
[email protected]
I've got some slight cracking in my aluminum nosebowl and have stop
drilled them twice.
I'm considering backing the cracks with fiberglass in hopes to keep the
vibration down.
How well does fiberglass adhere to aluminum?
What system is better.
I have easy access to the West system chemicals.
Any...

Fiberglass cloth weight vs 'finished' weight by
Fred the Red Shirt
I was perusing the composite matierals in the Aircraft Spruce
catalog pages and noted that the fiberglass (and other ) cloths
are characterized by a unit weight, like 5.8 oz/square yard.
My naive assumption is that the cloth as purchased would,
on average, weigh 5.8 oz /square yd.
But some of the...

Fiberglass Cowl Problem by
Boelkowj
Hello All: I have 10-32 screws with 8s size Tennerman Washers as attach
fittings. The cowling holes have worn slowly but surely and now I know it is
time to fix this vibration problem. I like the size of the 8s but I suspect I
really should use 10s. They are unpainted and not bonded to the cowling....

Fiberglass release agent? by
[email protected]
i planning on building a few fiberglass pieces from a mold this weekend
but don't have time to order a release agent.
From looking at the internet, most release agents are wax based products.
Can I just use paste wax for the mold?
Any other suggestions?
Thanks
Dave

Fiberglass revisited by
Lou
I came across some fiberglass at 1.6oz per yard. I bought a small
sample to play with but it's an extremely fine weave. I've been using
the 1.45 oz e-glass for a while now. Can anyone tell me if this is just
as good, better or worse to use?

Fiberglass sample packs??????? by
Lou
Anyone know where I could order a bunch of small samples of different
weights
and thicknesses of small amounts of fiberglass? I'm looking to
experiment
with different sizes so I'll need 3 or 4 square feet of the different
sizes.

Fiberglass seperation by
Lou
Ok, I've made a few pieces to try out using 1/4" foam and fiberglass on
both sides. When I cut the pieces to shape with my band saw, small
strips (1/4" or so) seem to want to seperate. Is this common or did I
mix the epoxy wrong? The big parts are staying together, the fiberglass
itself is staying...

fiberglass tapes by
Lou
Ok, I want to reinforce all my corners with fiberglass tape. Aircraft
Spruce sells a 50 yard 8.7 oz tape to do this job. Can anyone tell me
why I shouldn't use cut strips of my 1.4 oz cloth instead of this very
heavy tape?

Fiberglass Vacuum Bagging Technique...Resin Infusion by
Steve
Is anyone using the new fiberglass process called Resin Infusion?
This is the process where you lay all of your fiber reinforcements down dry
(along with core material if required), then seal inside a vacuum bag (which
you can take all the time you want, no need to hurry as in normal...
