Using radio to contact persons on ground while flying? by
steve
Hi Everyone,
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I purchased a backup handheld radio
for cross country flights, etc. and was wondering if it is permitted to use
it so I can contact my family while flying over the local area.
I would use a frequency not used locally for any other...

Using the magenta circles by
Ace Pilot
A friend recently asked me to explain the magenta circles seen around
numerous airports on sectionals. It got me to thinking about how
useful they are. Personally, if the weather isn't good enough to fly
VFR in Class E airspace, I'm not going to fly VFR, even if it is legal
in Class G airspace. So,...

Using thermals to climb? by
Kees Mies
Hi All,
I need some advise.
The summer is starting and my plane is a rotten climber, certainly on
hot days at MTOW.
The best it can do in these conditions is about 300fpm.
My idea is to use thermals to climb (much)faster like gliders do.
Is this a stupid idea?
If my idea is not that stupid how do...

Kai Glaesner
Hello,
I'm just playing around a bit with Jeppesen FliteStar/FliteMap, tying to
find out how I can use my own (scanned) paper charts with this otherwise
very satisfying product.
Besides Jeppesens own RasterPlus format there seem to be some other possible
raster formats:

USS Ronald Reagan Question by
Jay Honeck
Someone has posted some cool pix from the launch of the new super carrier
over on the binary channel (alt.binaries.pictures.aviation), which got me
wondering...
Is the new USS Ronald Reagan a *replacement* carrier? If so, which one is
being retired?
Or did we just add another battle group to the...

UTC explosion near RHV by
Hilton
Hi,
I know Cecil asked if anyone had a PIREP about the explosion a few days ago
while chemicals were being mixed. Well, I flew over UTC today and this is
what I saw. There are a bunch of buildings pretty close to each other. The
building that was demolished was a couple hundred yards from the...

UTICA TRSA shape by
Jeff Saylor
The UTICA TRSA (western New York) is situated around both
towered Oneida County (KUCA) and non-towered Griffis Airpark
(KRME), formerly Griffis AFB. It is centered on KRME, so perhaps
that is where the radar antenna is.
The outer perimeter of the TRSA is a large circle, about 14-15 nm
radius,...

Utterly off topic - mostly by
Jim Fisher
Okay, I'm looking for a new hosting service that I will resell to my
customers. I'm fairly pleased with the providers I have been using
(webmasters.com mostly) but I have some higher-ended customers who may need
a little more than webmasters provides.
I like keeping business local wherever...

V Speeds by

VNO is Maximum Structural Cruising Speed per definition in CFR FAR Part
1. If you were to ask what is VNO? Why do some Pilots constantly
believe its Normal Operation Speed. The Green arc is the normal
operation. The yellow arc is cautionary range. The white arc is the
range in which we can use...

V-n Diagrams by
john smith
I have been playing around making V-n diagrams for the various airplanes
I rent from my flying club.
I made one for our P28T-201RT and was looking for the numbers on the
PA32-300.
The one item for the PA32-300 that would not follow the formula for
calculating the lift line was Va. The book shows...
