first DC now NYC by
[email protected]
DC wasn't enough. Now a new ADIZ around NY is coming with an internal
flight restricted zone. Will the idiocy never stop? !
We are slowly but surely proving to the world our level of intelligence
and learning ability. From locked 3 foot fences to TFRs that serve no
purpose except derail...

Katrina by
W P Dixon
Guys and Gals,
Take a moment tonight for thoughts and prayers for the folks on the Gulf
coast. Winds are now 160 knots. To our newsgroupers in the Mobile area I
sure hope yall have gotten out of Dodge. Let's all hope that things won't be
as bad as everyone is saying. Please do what you can to help...

Rocks Thrown at Border Patrol Chopper
Aug 25 3:31 PM US/Eastern
YUMA, Ariz.
Illegal immigrants threw rocks at a Border Patrol helicopter,
forcing the pilot to make an emergency landing when one of the rocks
damaged the rotor, the agency said.
Neither the pilot nor the Border Patrol observer was...

Cherokees in close formation by
Bob Chilcoat
I heard what sounded like a twin with poorly sync'd props Sunday. Looked up
and watched two Cherokees in close echelon formation flying over. Never
thought I'd see Cherokees doing that. Now I want to find someone to do that
with. (Joking, our insurance won't allow formation flying).

possible FAA action... flight or fight? by
[email protected]
I got in a little trouble with the FAA and they want to take my license
for 6 months. Now their case isn't too strong (and based very much on
the subjectivity of "safe" and not on any clear cut violation of a
FAR). I'm trying to decide whether to fight it (expensive attorney
fees) or just suck it...

Student Drop-Out Rates...why? by
Jay Honeck
In another thread, we have been hashing out whether some pilots in training
quit flying because of a hair-raising event, such as a brush with disaster,
or getting lost.
Few ex-students seem to admit that this was a reason for quitting, but the
drop-out rate seems to be far higher than it should...

Checkride Checklist Question by
Gary G
A fellow student and I were dsicussing something,
and we certainly intent to ask our instructors.
There are some points in the flight where the simple
(but important) checklist needs to occur.
For example, after takeoff clean-up, after landing clean-up,
before landing check list, etc . . .
Places...

Airspeed comparison table by
grubertm
Our flying club has a large number of different trainers for rent at
varying prices, but I am not sure which planes are suited for what
missions. Is there any site that offers an overview in terms of max.
cruise airspeed and max. useful load (basic configuration), etc. ?
Maybe someone in this group...

TAF KNBG by

It's been hard to avoid the Hurricane Katrina coverage, but somehow the raw
numbers have a real impact over the media hype. The forecast shows eye
passage about 1630-1830Z tomorrow. Here's the TAF from New Orleans NAS:

For all you CAP guys by

A Sci Fi story originally published in Astounding Science Fiction, July
1956. Copyright renewed, 1984
Very entertaining story about a CAP crew searching for a downed Russian
bomber that just dropped a nuke.

ATC of Near-Miss over BOS by

Saw this over at LiveATC.net forums. Thought it may be of interest.
I thought the controller was very professional and avoided an over the air
arguement nicely.

optimal altitude calculations? by
[email protected]
hi: I have a simple question for the piloting physics majors. we all
know that planes have less air resistance to overcome at higher
altitudes, but that normally aspirated planes have less power at higher
altitudes. presumably, both are proportions of what happens at sea
level, and are hopefully...

ADS-B by

I noticed that last month the FAA activated the ADS-B system in

I've seen a couple of fluffy demo videos but I wanted to see what you
could actually get.
I was particually interested in the graphical weather capabilities

How to break your Garmin 396 by
Dan Luke
Just let battery run down with the USB XM weather antenna connected.
I did this to see how much battery life I would get with the screen set
at half brightness (5+ hours), but when I reconnected external power,
the unit begin an endless series of re-boots, never getting past the "I
agree" lawyer...

396 flight test by
Dan Luke
Since, according to The Weather Channel, Katrina is about to wipe
everything between N'Awlins and Pensacola from the face of the earth, I
put Plan C into effect and flew '87D 150 mi. east to Dothan, AL and
drove a rent car back.
That gave me a chance to use the Garmin 396 for the first time on...
