Jim Weir's solar charger by R. Lee Jarvis
The Jan '07 issue of Kitplanes has an article by Jim Weir on a charge controller for a small solar panel. I've got a 5W solar panel that I'd like to use to charge & maintain a 12v 7Ah SLA in my Luscombe. Is anyone familiar enough with this circuit to know if it could handle something in the...

Insurance Urban Legends (or not)... by Kyle Boatright
There are three insurance tales that are repeated from time to time in various aviation forums: 1) If you own an experimental and don't power it with a certified engine, you may not be able to find insurance. In the latest iteration of this tale, the difficult to insure engines included...

Congrats to Van's-- 5000 ! by [email protected]
Today they had the official count at 5000! It was an RV-8. (My first RAH post was a question about an RV-8 answered by Juan probably 8 years ago.) Congratulations Van. And this year is the 35th anniversary with over 15,000 tail kits sold. www.vansaircraft.com

Stainless steel exhaust by headwind
Aircraft Spruce has an exhaust for Pitts, AcroSport, etc. Has anyone used it? If so, did it fit and do you recomend. It bolts to the engine and has ball joints for 2 straight pipes. I plan to use on an AcroSport with AEIO-320. Headwind

Ultralight Formation Flying by DABEAR
What is the largest formation of Ultralights ever assembled for flight, when and where was the formation held, and was the formation held for Air Show or other purposes? Are Ultralights adept at formation or can they be blown around to the point that formation flying would not be safe? Is there a...

Ultralight Air Racing by DABEAR
I notice where a group in Europe is reviving the Schnieder Cup Trophy races using ultralight seaplanes. I was curious if there were any Ultralight races, land or sea, going on here in the United States or North America?

Poll: Is your country deploying Mode-S ? by Rob Turk
The Netherlands has decided to no longer postpone Mode-S introduction. Starting March 2007, all IFR flights must be Mode-S transponder equipped, and in March 2008 this becomes mandatory for VFR as well. This includes flights coming in from foreign countries. I'm curious as I hear that most...

Ultralights in Space? by DABEAR
Much ado has been made of the Mars Rovers and the use of a vehicle to explore the moon in the 1970s. I was curious if there was enough atmosphere on a planet like Mars that Astronauts could utilize Ultralights in their exploration and if so, what would the make-up of the ultralight aircraft be,...

Since the untimely death of our friend (and chief charter pilot at the local FBO) while ferrying a Spencer Air Car back from Seattle, WA last week, our local pilot community has been roiled with speculation about the cause of the crash. Of course we won't know anything definitive for a long while,...

Experimental SeaBee? by Tri-Pacer
The editor's Log in the current Sport Aviation mentioned that the Experimental Seabee featured in last month's magazine had possibly run into some problem with its certification. The implication was that the Reno FSDO had screwed up issuing an amateur build AW certificate. So did this chap...

How airplanes are made. by Lou
