FAA Knowledge Test Results by
Richard Moore
I had taken the Flight Engineer Knowledge test a couple of years ago
(8/2001 to be exact.) I just took the knowledge test again today (10/2003),
due to the fact that some job applications wanted the test to be current
within 24 months, and the previous test had expired. I noticed on the...

john price
As soon as we can get 10 people committed to attending,
we will be starting another session of the Instrument
Ground School. The length of the classes will vary
slightly depending on the subjects to be taught, but
will generally last about 2 hours.
The cost for the entire 9-week course will be...

WxWorx flight test by
Dan Luke
Today was a good day for it, as there were CBs in all directions
around Mobile (so, what else is new?). Around the airport, though, it
was scattered cu. with bright sun, a good test for the Sony notebook's
viewability.
The WxWorx receiver slipped neatly into the Cessna's right front map
pocket...

New IFR Pilot! by
[email protected]
Hey all... just figured I'd share that I passed my IFR checkride a
week or so ago. If anything, actually passing made me more leery of going
out on own. Don't want hubris, but need to figure out what I can do.
Just as a side note, I got to use it a bit last weekend coming
back from Ohio. VFR at...

Transponder code switching by
Ken Pruchnick
What is the proper way to switch transponder codes? The way I have
been taught is to put the transponder in stand by, switch to the new
code. Then turn it to mode C
I had an instructor tell me to just change it to the new code without
turning it to stand by first.
Like to hear from controllers as...

IR without actual IMC by
Iain Wilson
Anyone IR without having actually flown in IMC? My checkride is around the
corner and I've no actual IFR yet. I'm itching to experience it but the
damned weather isn't co-operating (seemed the same way with the PPL!).

Brief an approach by
Ditch
Are there any good online references on how to brief an approach? If so, can
you point me in the right direction? Thanks...

Vision limiting with Lightspeed & glasses by
PaulH
I took my checkride yesterday, and when I attached my Sporty's
flip-down foggles to my glasses, the examiner nearly had heart failure
- "you can't use those!!!!!!!" She said they allow too much
peripheral vision to permit transition to in-cloud flight. We
completed the checkride with a cardboard...

Requirement to fly departure procedures by
[email protected]
I was always under the assumption that if my atc clearance received on
the ground was direct to a fix, I was free to forgo the departure
procedure and do an immediate turn after takeoff. I note that FAR
91.129, Operations in class D airspace states that:
"(g) Departures. No person may operate an...

New Kent VOR Approach by
Al
Anyone know why New Kent, VA's VOR approach is NA at night? And does this
prohibition apply to part 91 operators?

Aircraft Designation Book by

getting close to the end of our printing run. I am sure that if we expected
the kind of response we have had, we would have budgeted for...

Night Currency by
Doug Campbell
Practicing for my IFR, with a safety pilot (required crewmember)
I am not current at night. Can we fly this way, and achieve
currency? Not a passenger, since he is required crew.
Not an issue for my partner, we both need to get current
and trust each other's ability. Is it legal?
TIA, Doug

INFLIGHT IFR Training glasses
I just ordered a pair of these... Any instrument pilots/students have any
experience with this product? Supposedly it is a fairly new product on the
market.

Detroit: choice of IFR airports? by
Mike & Janet Larke
From what I've read Detroit area airports get pretty mixed reviews, some
pretty negative for g/a and general level of service & facilities. Can
anyone recommend the Detroit area airports to fly in to, and warn of the
ones to avoid? (With instrument approaches/ILS preferred.)---for
single-engine...

Airport security still a welfare to work program in Atlanta by
JJ
This quote clipped from fox news is total bull**** in Atlanta .(The
worlds busiest airport) TSA did not change a thing. The black welfare to
work program at Hartsfield Atlanta was replaced by TSA with blacks in
charge. At the beginning, there were white managers and white employees.
But, the blacks...

Decent into Cleveland by
john cop
Have been inactive for many years.
About 20 years ago, when flying up from the south, I got suckered in.
The tops slowly rose untill I was flying at over 15,000 (Mooney 201)
near Cleveland, It was clear on top and the temp was in the mid 40s
on the ground, and the freezing level was high enough...

"Direct when able" by
Mitchell Gossman
When instructed to fly a heading then "Direct XYZ when able", does a
controller expect a call when you are in fact able and will be turning
on course? Usually it is a trivial turn since the heading they give is
a good guess for direct course.
I've had conflicting experience. One time after being...

Great Lakes lake effect snow by

Ok, it's coming up to that season, and was vividly demonstrated when I got
hit by hail driving through Watertown last night. I drive a lot between
Rochester NY and Ottawa Ontario, and Rochester NY and Whitby Ontario, and
frequently those drives are in good VFR conditions except for that band...
