Don Brown and lat-long by
Bob Gardner
I know Don Brown. He is a good 'ol country boy, and an entertaining writer, but he is not a pilot. His aviation world is circumscribed by the AIM and Air Traffic Control Handbook, with no latitude (no pun intended) allowed. His Avweb column about filing IFR is almost perfect, but there are...

Obstacle avoidance between take-off and airway by
Mxsmanic
Yesterday I tried to plan a flight from Big Bear City (California) to Santa
Monica, in a Bonanza. The routing I worked out was L35..DAWNA.V8.PDZ.V186
TIFNI.ELMOO.DARTS..KSMO. DAWNA is on a portion of the airway that shows a MEA
of 10500 on the chart. Since I was westbound, I figured to climb to...

Transponder Landing System by
VOR-DME[_4_]
One airport I frequently use in the northeast has adopted an improvement plan
which includes, along with a slight runway extension, the installation of a
Transponder Landing System. The airport is currently served by a VOR approach
and a GPS approach, but terrain considerations would almost...

Question on airplane's IFR capability by
Slav Inger
I'm planning on transitioning from a PA-28-181 to Diamond models (DA20C1
and then to DA40). I'd like to use the DA40 for longer trips and DA20
for putzing around the airport practicing IFR approaches, possibly in
IMC. There isn't a question as to DA40's IFR capability, but I'm
running into a bit...

Dual Transponders? by
Scott Aron Bloom
Ok, Im not talking about the commercial carriers. But why would a general
aviation plane have dual transponders? Why waste the panel space? So they
go
tits up that often in flight where its necessary?

Canadian holding procedures by
Derrick Early
What are the holding procedures in Canada? On the approach plates, they say
something like "Climb to 1900 on track of 297 deg. LEFT turn to 2T NDB."
However, they don't show any holding pattern. Do they expect you to enter a
hold at the beckon? What radial do you use?

Confusion by
Jon Woellhaf
I recently filed IFR and received a clearance from Ground. As part of the
clearance, I was told, "... after departure turn left heading 300 ..." I
taxied to the active, did my run-up, called Tower and said I was ready for
departure. I was soon cleared for takeoff.
At about 1000 AGL, I began the...

Elite and CH Flight Sim Yoke - USB by
tscottme
Is anyone using or know for a fact that you can use the Ch Products
Flight Sim Yoke-USB with Elite sim? I am specifically asking if you
have the throttle/prop/mixture functionality of that yoke while using
Elite. I would like to fly the Mooney and Bonanza but I don't want to
buy a separate...

Best foggles or hood w/ Headset and Glasses by
Jeff Saylor
If you are a pilot who uses both a headset and eyeglasses, what IFR
trainng device works and fits best for you? The generic foggles, like
Sporty's sells? The Jeppesen JeppShades Flip-Up hood? A particular
model of hood?

will this fly? by
Lee Elson
Please excuse the cross post, but the topic might be of interest to
several groups.
I'm wondering whether providing light aircraft transportation services
(people and/or cargo) and consulting to small businesses is likely to
be a successful approach to setting up a very small aviation business.

Crossing a stepdown fix high by
David Brooks
Is there any problem with controllers or examiners if I cross a stepdown fix
several hundred feet above the depicted altitude? I believe that, legally,
I can be at any altitude above the crossing minimum, but would this be a
bust of the PTS +/-100 tolerance, or cause a problem for ATC?

VOR technigue, don't overshoot by
tscottme
There are a couple of techniques I've never been particularly good at while
flying, proper rudder work, and smooth turn onto a VOR radial without over
or undershooting the needle. What's a good way to smoothly know when to
start a standard rate turn onto the heading to intercept a VOR/GPS...

how to get NACO online charts conveniently? by
Dave Butler
It's great that the charts are now "free" online at http://www.naco.faa.gov/ but
it seems to take a lot of my personal time to figure out which charts I need.
I used to just carry the paper charts with the knowledge that if I had to
divert, I had all the charts for all nearby airports.
How do you...

Are handheld GPSes becoming a defacto primary nav source? by
Paul Tomblin
This week I did several IFR flights, some in IMC and most in VMC. On a
couple of those flights, ATC offered me direct to the next VOR after the
one I was navigating to, well before I could actually pick up the signal.
One time departing Rochester, they told me to go direct Elmira when I was
less...

Transponder code switching by
Ken Pruchnick
What is the proper way to switch transponder codes? The way I have
been taught is to put the transponder in stand by, switch to the new
code. Then turn it to mode C
I had an instructor tell me to just change it to the new code without
turning it to stand by first.
Like to hear from controllers as...

Cleared for the ILS 16 approach or circle to land 34 Hawkins.
Exactly what is...
