Garmin 1000 turn co-ordinator? by
John H. Kay
Hi.
How do the new glass cockpits (Garmin or Avidyne) indicate rate of turn,
and also whether the plane is slipping or skidding?
I know we can do the simple rule of thumb sum for standard rate turns,
giving the approx. bank angle for the speed we're using, but we're all
trained to check the...

Great Lakes lake effect snow by
Paul Tomblin
Ok, it's coming up to that season, and was vividly demonstrated when I got
hit by hail driving through Watertown last night. I drive a lot between
Rochester NY and Ottawa Ontario, and Rochester NY and Whitby Ontario, and
frequently those drives are in good VFR conditions except for that band...

Getting an IFR Clearance by
Kobra
Fellow Aviators,
I was flying on Tuesday from N14 in NJ to Baltimore-Washington Airport. I
was going IFR because of the Washington ADIZ.
When I called McGuire Approach for my clearance I was given the route and
all information except my release, void and advise times. They said to call
back...

I have just finished two concurent aircraft learning programs
1)Getting my instrument currency back.
doing some paractice, taking a IPC.
All done in a round dial 172.
2)Getting checked out in a G1000 182.
I've finished the King G1000 VFR and IFR course and spent about

VOR approach SMO by
Robert M. Gary
The other day I shot the VOR approach into SMO for the first time in
low actual. I've often looked at that approach as one of the most
difficult I've seen published so it was interesting to actually try
it. The weather was 008OVC with something like 3sm HZ. I touched down
about 3/4 down the runway...

How long to keep VOR check records? by
Ross Oliver
So here's a question I had never thought of until getting my
instrument rating and owning an IFR-equipped aircraft: how long
should records of VOR checks be retained? Do they need to be
retained at all? Can the FAA come to me and ask, "Remember that
IFR flight to SLO you made 2 years ago? Show...

GPS approaches with VNAV vertical guidance by
Doug
With all the talk about the GNS80 and the Garmin 430 having VNAV and
LAAS capability, I would like to know something. Are there any actual
approaches in use that one can fly, today, that use these features? Do
you get vertical guidance from GPS derived altitude or is it vertical
guidance from...

Liberals Ignore The Wright Brothers by

Liberals HATE America wrote:
Alas, Orville and Wilbur Wright are today pigeon-holed as "dead white

The author is sadly misinformed. I couldn't care less about "white" or
"male". However, "dead" is a Bad Thing. I certainly expend a...

Non-published hold with Garmin 430W by
Evan Salant
There's not a lot in the user's manual about how to set up a non-
published hold using the Garmin 430W. Lets say you are on a
flightplan with SBJ VOR as one of your waypoints and ATC needs you to
hold on the SBJ 160 radial right hand turns one minute legs. Is
there anything to simplify this...

An odd clearance...can anyone explain? by
Andrew Gideon
Departing Lancaster the other day, I received an odd clearance. I was
cleared from the airport to the Lancaster VOR, then East Texas VOR...
It was that first leg (Lancaster Airport to Lancaster VOR) that confused me.
The VOR is on the field. I have little choice but to go past it as a
trundle...

"cleared to ... when direct ..." by
John Harper
Got an odd clearance the other day, on climbout from Santa Monica
(IFR but in perfect VMC): "climb and maintain 6000 when direct
Ventura". I took this to mean that someone would later clear
me direct VTU, whereupon I would climb. However I never got
such a clearance, and later an evidently nervous...

Inaccurate airspeed indicator by
Wyatt Emmerich
I had a my two-year transponder/static system check while visiting my mother
in San Antonio. When I departed, I noticed the airspeed didn't come up like
it should. I attributed this to shifting winds and assumed I had a slight
tailwind. Then in cruise, I did my normal operating performance check....

Constant Angle Non-Precision Approaches (CANPA) by
John Bell
I noticed the thread about "Crossing a stepdown fix high" got quite a bit of
debate. One of the topics in much of the discussion centered on stabilized
approaches verses dive and drive.
I was initially a skeptic on using CANPA, but I have come to believe that it
is a better way of flying...

I got into a discussion with an non-pilot MD comparing

after a name including my own). Flying-wise, I have a PPL and

What caused the VSI and ALT bouce in the IMC? by
cpu
Yesterday I flew a cessna 172 in the hard IFR. When I penetrated
apparently a heavy cumulonimbus rain cloud area, the VSI and altimeter
started to oscillate and bounce +/- 250 FPM (ALT oscilated 200~300 ft
up and back). The rate of bounces was about 3 to 4 Hz (3 to 4 times
per second). It lasted...

ILS Critical Area signage: Localizer or Glideslope? by
Adam K.
Hi,
Does the ILS Critical Area sign apply to the localizer or the
glideslope antenna? Or is this is a dumb question?
CCR (Concord California) 19R has a localizer approach. No glideslope.
It has an ILS Critical Area sign. I read recently that ILS
equipped fields require the ILS critical area sign...
