Homing verses Tracking by
John Bell
I got interested in the effects of homing on a waypoint as opposed to
tracking. I have seen the illustrations and have understood the concept for
some time, but I have never seen any numbers. If you are interested here is
the results of my playing around with...

Manufacturers And Training by
Gezellig
Reading one of the piloting web/video services and came across this
comment:
"Still; there remains the specter of trouble ahead... as most of the
better offerings at the USSAE (LSA aircraft) cost well over 100K... and
we're not sure that there is a sustainable market for aircraft in that
price...

IFR Alternate Requirement by
gwengler
To my knowledge, in the US one must file an alternate IFR airport
regardless of the weather if the destination airport does not have an
IFR approach. Can someone please quote me the FAA regulation where
this is actually spelled out? Thanks!

Compass turns revisited by
Bob Gardner
Got a little memory jog in the April 2006 Designee Update...other than
"Basic Instrument Flight Maneuvers," there is nothing in the 2004 (latest)
PTS about timed turns OR compass turns. Nothing. Nada. So instrument pilot
wannabes need not be concerned about demonstrating either one to the
examiner....

Garmin 430 user waypoints by
Red Baron
Hello,
I am a VFR pilot and I currently have a 96C in which I loaded some 700
user waypoints, neede in Italy to find VFR reporting points and
airstrips. My new club's airplane will have a Garmin GNS430. I contacted
Garmin in order to know if it would be possible to load waypoints
through the serial...

resume flying after 25 year layoff by
David Banahan
When I was young I got my license the week I turned 18. I left flying when
I left my first wife. I would like to resume flying, but want to focus on
IFR simulation (most cost effective) at home training before beginning
actual flight training. Any advice would be appreciated to help me develop
a...

Lowrance AirMap 2000c update by
Stephen Farris
There's a software update for the Lowrance AirMap 2000c (version 1.6.0)
dated 5/26/06 on the Lowrance website. It fixes the E6B/wind calculation
problem, among other things.

Printing off Jepp charts: What paper do you use? by
Peter R.
Looks like Jeppesen is finally dropping their prices on JeppView and no
longer penalizing for convenience. Thus, over the next week I am going to
switch from the paper Airway Manual and that time-consuming, every two-week
amendment filing service to JeppView.
I remember reading that there are...

Controller Forum by
Greg Esres
NATCA (National Air Traffic Controllers Association) runs a web-based
forum where you can ask questions of controllers.
Seems like a great resource, but it's presently highly underutilitzed.

I'm sure pilots and controllers would benefit if the site became more
highly...

Attitude indicators by
R&A Kyle
A typical AI display is "inside out", ie the view is from inside the plane
looking out. Some (Russian) aircraft use the reverse display, ie a fixed
horizon and a moving airplane graphic. Does anyone know of work done to
measure the human factors benefits / penalties of these two approaches?
BTW...

pitot heat question by
K. Ari Krupnikov
Coming back from Mammoth this past Sunday and flying through a snow
cloud West of the Sierras, I had the Pitot freeze over. I realized it
was frozen when I tried to correct for altitude gained in turbulence
and the airspeed indication didn't increase even as I pushed the nose
down and could hear...

Enroute charts valid for use in Canada? by

The enroute chart for the border states include a significant portion of
Canada. Is this sufficient for IFR into Canada? The VFR sectional contains
a warning that the airspace classification may be different in Canada and
that the pilot should consult the Canadian Flight Supplement. But the...

Was anybody else trying to watch the coverage of the d-day ceremonies ?

should be on the event and the men and woman who fought then not the
reporters or the tv program....
The reporters will not shut up and...
