Dawley Aviation PIREP, or: Atlas is BACK by Jay Honeck
We were grounded last week, after discovering a cracked exhaust pipe and rotted muffler baffles during routine maintenance. Amazingly, we discovered that Dawley Aviation (*the* exhaust repair station in the Midwest, and the place my A&P recommended) is located in Burlington, WI -- literally on the...

GPS396 terrain warnings near airports by xyzzy
When I fly with my GPS396, I usually don't put in a flight plan or any direct-tos; I use the panel mounted KLN94 for that. I use the 396 just for weather, terrain, and additional situational awareness. I had never heard the spurious terrain warnings near airports that Dave Butler reported in...

Bulb Replacement King KX-170B by Marco Leon
Hi all. One of the lights on my KX-170B is out (NAV side). Has anyone tried replacing this themselves or is it a technician-only task? If yes, then what bulb was used and where did you get one? Any other tips would be appreciated. Thanks, Marco Leon

Flying without FAA medical or insurance by Doodybutch
Last year, an acquaintance of mine turned 85 and stopped flying and sold his airplane. He just figured that he had done it long enough and he wasn't as sharp as he used to be. He flew a lot right up until he sold his plane and he was quite experienced. I suspect for private reasons that he had...

Followup, was: First time instrument failure while in IMC by Jack Allison
Well...it could have been water in the pitot system...and maybe not. After the shop removed the ASI then blew high pressure air through the system, everything works just fine. No identifiable debris from the system though. Before removing the ASI, blowing low pressure air through the system would...

Flight Cheetah FL 210 by O. Sami Saydjari
Does anyone have a PIREP on the Flight Cheetah FL210. We just got one, but it crashed on first use and I have been unable to raise anyone in technical support to explain how to get it up and running. It seems feature rich and all, but reception on first use was poor. How have other people's...

Resource for choosing a plane? by Douglas Paterson
So, I've decided to go for my first airplane. As I get started looking for "the" airplane, I'm hoping I can find some help here in narrowing my choices. The more I look, the more overwhelmed I get. I'm starting to think that finding & buying the damn thing will be anticlimactic--deciding *what*...

The defrost cable is stuck on my Musketeer. It's just a wire encased in another spirally wound wire. Any suggestions?

Prop Indexing by Mike Granby
Why are fixed-pitch props on PA-28s indexed to the 10-4 position from the front? a) To help hand propping? b) To minimize vibration? c) To improve performance? My money is on (a) but others disagree.

The big question by Prime
What I want to know is: If I want to have an airshow at my hotel, do I need a 337 to fix the plastic sign on my AOPA plane before or after I pay my taxes? Prime

IO540 baffle repair by Jim Burns
Last week I found the baffle on our left engine's #6 cylinder had broken the bracket off the bottom of the baffle. The bracket holds a long skinny tension/stabilizer rod between the #6 cylinder baffle and the #2 cylinder baffle. From what I can tell, the bracket simply needs to be rivited back on...

Lycoming O-360 ring gear by [email protected]
Hey all. Now that my holiday travels are over, I'm planning to do some maintenance to my Cherokee. The ring gear has gotten chewed up over time, and now will sometimes not disengage while the starter is rolling it over. Worn/broken teeth, etc. I was pretty sure it was a 122-tooth model, but...

That expensive Anniversary by Michelle
It is my tenth anniversary owning an airplane. It has been an expensive one. In the last year.... I have installed a new HSI(old one just kept spinning), Re-built both magnetos, replaced my fuel pump, replaced the Oil filter adapter, (that's everything on the accessory case!) replaced my Attitude...

Stop Making Sense by Bret Ludwig
Light aircraft are not a business tool. There is _no such thing_ as a rational purchase of a light airplane. It's a heinously expensive toy that will likely be a financial disaster no matter what. Don't go 95% broke buying an unfulfilling spam can. Buy what you want, which if you have anything but...

Pirep request: FlightPrep vs 396 by Jim Burns
I've seen plenty of pireps on the Garmin 396, but is anybody using the FlightPrep software with the Motion Computing tablet and XM Weather/GPS/Electronic Flightbag options?? Also, is there any software/hardware combination when using a laptop or tablet that can take advantage of the XM Radio...

Audio panel observation/question by Mike Noel
I have a Garmin SL30 as my nav/com1 and a KY97A as my com2. My audio panel is a King something-or-another with (among others) MIC1, MIC2 and BOTH buttons. MIC1 and MIC2 are mutually exclusive and the BOTH switch works independently. When BOTH is off, MIC1 causes transmission and reception on...
