Mach 7! by Dylan Smith
It's good to see that despite all the naysayers, NASA still does incredibly cool things. I watched the X-43A successfully launch on NASA tv over the Internet, and it turns out that they got Mach 7 out of an aircraft powered by an air-breathing engine. Good to see new research like this into...

faith in the fuel delivery infrastructure by Chris Hoffmann
I'll probably need an airport tour to answer this to my satisfaction, but I thought it merited a discussion here anyway. It seems pretty standard that, after an airplane is refueled, you wait 10-15 minutes and resample the fuel to check for contaminants (water). I recently witnessed a situation...

Bizarre Fatal Accident-Suicide? by Rocky
Over the weekend an 84 yr old man apparently unfastened his seatbelt, climbed out of the cockpit of the biplane he was riding in and stepped off to fall to his death. He hit some power lines that appeared to cut his torso in half and the parts plunged onto an apartment building. The pilot attempted...

Taking my plane over to Henderson airport from North Las Vegas airport this morning, got some decent pictures, I am going to get some better ones when I can get the wife to take them. Anyone interested in seeing the strip, and flying over Las Vegas International airport (LAS) at 4500 ft here you...

F18 Crash at RDU, Raleigh, NC by Tom Hyslip
An F-18 Naval Strike Fighter crashed at RDU today. It appears it was taxing or in the process of taking off, but never lifted off. Might have been wake turbulance from another F-18 that had just departed. http://www.wral.com/news/2953163/detail.html

Ballooning! by Tony Cox
I had the joy of logging my first 0.2 hours in a hot air balloon last weekend over the Jean dry lake (near Las Vegas). It's interesting how much fun you can have with just one control -- a little lever which switches on the burner. Strangely, it wasn't that difficult to control the vertical...

Shutting down engine Question by Lisa
Perhaps this doesn't matter much for a non-turbocharged engine, but an instructor says that it is best to idle the engine at 1,000 RPM for a few moments before Mixtu Idle Cut-Off at that RPM to shut down. The POH says throttle full aft, then mixture cut-off to shut down. Which is best?

Degausser, what is it? by Robert M. Gary
It was recommended to me that I should rent a degausser to get my compass to behave more reasonably. I called a dealership that rents it, they are asking $50 plus shipping for 1 week's use. They said it requires power. I'm having trouble invisioning what this thing is. I'm also curious what it...

Flying with an infant by Bruce McFadden
My daughter and son-in-law have asked me to fly them along with their four week old son from KTCL to KGIF (about 450 miles) in about 2 weeks. Daughter wants her aging grandmother to see the infant. Her pediatrician feels the infant is too young to be around large crowds like in at a large airport....

Using your own maps in FliteStart/FliteMap by Kai Glaesner
Hello, I'm just playing around a bit with Jeppesen FliteStar/FliteMap, tying to find out how I can use my own (scanned) paper charts with this otherwise very satisfying product. Besides Jeppesens own RasterPlus format there seem to be some other possible raster formats: BSB
